The Accidental Tourist is a gripping story written by Bill Bryson where he recounts his travel experiences with humor. He casually narrates various incidents that happened during his travels to different places. He often acts clumsily and finds it difficult to manage his things systematically. He wonders how other people can easily do their routine work without any difficulty. A couple of times, he failed to locate the washroom in the movie theater and ended up in a narrow path of the door, which closes on its own. He finds it difficult to lead a normal life like other people and wonders how others manage to do it so easily.

Once the writer was traveling with his family to England on the occasion of Easter. Arriving during check-in at Boston's Logan Airport, he suddenly remembered that he had joined British Airways' frequent flyer program. He remembered that he had put the card in a carry-on bag that hung around his neck. When he tried to open the bag, its zipper came closed and he forced to open it. In this sequence, the zip broke and all the things kept inside the bag started scattered here and there. Meanwhile, the author also noticed that his finger was injured and stuck in the zipper. He was horrified to see that his finger was bleeding.

In addition, the author mentions unforeseen troubles that occur during the journey. In one such instance, while traveling in an airplane, he bent down to tie his shoelace. Unfortunately, he got stuck when the person sitting next to him completely tilted his seat. With great difficulty he freed himself from that cramped situation. On another instance, he spilled some soft drinks on his co-traveller. Although the flight attendant cleaned up the mess, the writer again spilled another drink on the same passenger. The woman was completely drenched and annoyed for the inconvenience caused to the author.

However, his worst experience in a flight was when he was writing in a notebook and he sucked the tip of the pen. At that time he was also talking to a woman. Later when he went to the washroom, he noticed that the pen had leaked inadvertently and painted his teeth, tongue and mouth with blue ink. He felt weird for being so clumsy. Though the author is a gentleman, his ending always ends in some cumbersome situation. His wife was well aware of his absurdity. So, whenever food was served on the flight, she would instruct her children to remove the lid of the food for their father so that they could avoid any mishap.

However, the author clarifies that such unforeseen circumstances occur especially when he is traveling with his family. Whenever he travels alone, things work out perfectly as he sits quietly in his seat and avoids tying his shoelaces if necessary. He avoids making mistakes when he is traveling on his own. He admits that he has been careless in updating his frequent flyer card due to paucity of time. On several occasions, he either forgot to request air miles from airline officials or sometimes the airline did not record it in time. Furthermore, he mentioned that there were instances when the airline informed him that he was not entitled to use the air miles. Once due to a mismatch in his name on the ticket, he could not use his air miles and was ineligible to travel to Bali on a first class ticket.
