This play is an excerpt from the play 'The Browning Version' by Terrence Rattigan. Taplow is a student. He is asked to stay behind by one of the school's teachers, Mr. Crocker-Harris. That day was the last day of school before the holidays. Since the student was sick for one day during the week and had missed class, Mr. Crocker-Harris had given him some extra work and so he was still in school. He told Taplow that he would be back by 6:30 before leaving. Until then, Taplow had to remain in school. It is now 6:40. But Mr. Crocker-Harris had not returned.

Another teacher, Mr. Frank, came over and saw Taplow waiting for Mr. Crocker-Harris. Mr. Frank told Taplow to leave because Mr. Crocker was not there at the time. But Taplow refuses to do so because he is afraid of Mr. Crocker. Mr. Frank is jealous of Mr. Crocker-Harris for the fear the students developed for Mr. Crocker. He also encourages Taplow to make fun of Mr. Crocker-Harris. At the same time Mrs. Crocker-Harris arrives at the scene. She tells Taplow that her husband has gone somewhere and it will take some time for him to come back. She also tells Taplow to go and play until Mr. Crocker-Harris returns. But Taplow was afraid to leave.

In that instance Mrs. Crocker assures Taplow that she will take the blame if he goes to the chemist and buys some medicines for him. She actually intended to send Taplow from there. He was not in immediate need of drugs. She only had a strong desire to help the poor boy enjoy his freedom. Mr. Crocker wouldn't mind because the doctor's prescription was for him and not Mrs. Millie Crocker-Harris. Taplow's points are to be awarded by Mr. Crocker.

He was yet to declare the marks for Taplow. If Mr. Crocker doesn't find Taplow on his arrival, he won't give them (the result) the necessary division. Hence, Taplow will not be promoted. This was the reason why Taplow did not want to take any chances of leaving school before Mr. Crocker-Harris arrived. When he learns that the drugs are for Mr. Crocker, he agrees to go to the chemist and leaves the school.

उस उदाहरण में श्रीमती क्रॉकर ने टैपलो को आश्वासन दिया कि यदि वह केमिस्ट के पास जाएगा और उसके लिए कुछ दवाएं खरीदेगा तो वह उस पर दोष लेगी। वह वास्तव में वहां से टैपलो को भेजने का इरादा रखती थी। उसे दवाओं की तत्काल आवश्यकता नहीं थी। वह केवल गरीब लड़के को उसकी स्वतंत्रता का आनंद लेने में मदद करने की तीव्र इच्छा रखती थी। मिस्टर क्रोकर को कोई आपत्ति नहीं होगी क्योंकि डॉक्टर द्वारा दिया गया नुस्खा उनके लिए था न कि मिसेज मिली क्रोकर-हैरिस के लिए। टैपलो के अंक मिस्टर क्रोकर द्वारा दिए जाने हैं।

उसे टैपलो के लिए अंक घोषित करना बाकी था। अगर मिस्टर क्रॉकर अपने आगमन पर टैपलो को नहीं पाते तो वह उन्हें (परिणाम) आवश्यक विभाजन नहीं देंगे। ऐसे में टैपलो को पदोन्नत नहीं किया जाएगा। यही कारण था कि मिस्टर क्रोकर-हैरिस के आने से पहले टैपलो स्कूल छोड़ने का कोई मौका नहीं लेना चाहता था। जब उसे पता चलता है कि दवाएं मिस्टर क्रोकर के लिए हैं तो वह केमिस्ट के पास जाने के लिए राजी हो जाता है और स्कूल छोड़ देता है।
