Silk Road Summary in English

The writer leaves Ravu with Tsetan and Danielle. They were going towards Mount Kailash with the intention of completing the blank. The author informed Lhamo that he was leaving for Mount Kailash. He presented her with a long-sleeved sheepskin coat to protect her from the cold. Tsetan was a good driver. He knew the path that would lead them to Mount Kailash. On the way, they found gazelles gnawing on the grass. Later they came in herds of animals.
They passed it to Drokbas, who was taking care of their flocks. There were nomads' tents. They were accompanied by their huge dogs who guarded them. These dogs were cruel. They could now see the snow-capped mountains. The turns on the roads intensified. Now that he was gaining height, the author felt the pressure increasing in his ears.
They were 5,210 meters above sea level. The road was covered with snow. He was afraid that his car might overturn. Both Daniel and the author threw a handful of dirt at the grime. After that they could continue their journey. Continuing his ascent so far he was 5,400 meters above sea level. He stopped the car and opened the lid of the petrol tank to let out the gas which had accumulated as a result of the low atmospheric pressure which allowed the fuel to expand.
They were now crossing a pass. After sometime they came to the other side of the pass. At two o'clock they stopped for lunch and ate hot noodles inside a long canvas tent. A work camp was built on the banks of a dry salt lake. The plateau is covered by salt flats and small parts of the Tethys Ocean, which borders Tibet. It was a place full of activities. The workers here wore sunglasses to avoid the glare. Trucks were coming out laden with heaps of salt.
In the afternoon they reached the city of Hor. They were back on the main east-west highway that followed the old trade route from Lhasa to Kashmir. At this time Daniel returned to Lhasa. The author and Tsetan repaired two tires. Hor' was a grim, pitiful place. There was no vegetation, just dust and rocks and accumulated garbage. The city was on the banks of Lake Mansarovar, an ancient Hindu and Buddhist point. It is also the source of four great rivers: the Ganges, the Sutlej, the Indus and the Brahmaputra. Only the Sutlej flows from the lake, the other three rise on the banks of Mount Kailash. The writer drank tea in the only cafe in Hor. Later they left for Mount Kailash.
After 10:30 pm they left for Darchen. They were 4760 meters above sea level. One of his noses was blocked. He started breathing through his mouth. But when he got up, the movement cleared his nostrils. But he could not sleep.
Tsetan took the writer to Darchen Medical College the next morning. A Tibetan doctor treated him. He said that it is the effect of cold and altitude. On asking, the doctor told him that he would be able to do the blank. He came out of the hospital with a packet of medicine for 15 days. The writer slept well that night.
Tsetan later returned to Lhasa. Darchen gave him a clear view of the Himalayas. But there were no pilgrims. The author came to meet Kora, a Tibetan pilgrimage and a type of meditation practice. Sitting in the cafe, the writer came to Norbu. they became friends. Norbu was a Tibetan who worked at the Chinese Academy of Social Science in Beijing. He too had come to do blanks. He was happy to meet the author as both were academics. Norbu suggests that they should hire a yak to carry their belongings.
