The synopsis of AJ Cronin's story 'Birth' begins with protagonist Andrew Mason arriving at Bryngower around midnight, where, despite the jat hours, Joe Morgan was waiting for him. Joe Morgan is shown running around, impatient and anxious.

She knew this was not a difficult ordeal that was short-lived, and she probably didn't want the doctor to go, and thus it was in her best interest to make her stay as comfortable as possible. Andrew was tired and knew he could steal an hour's sleep if he got home but he chose to stay.
In the downstairs kitchen he drank the tea he had received from Mrs. Morgan's mother. After an hour he went to see Mrs. Morgan and came down again. Everything had come to a standstill except the wood burning in the stove. And the sound of Joe's footsteps is also roaming outside. Mrs. Morgan's mother, who was sitting in front of her, was motionless in her black dress and was constantly seeing the doctor.
Andrew then began to think about all the relationship failures that were happening around, and how they conflicted with the way he had. He was so engrossed in his thoughts that when the person sitting in front of him addressed him, he started. Mrs Morgan's mother explained that Susan, that is, Mrs Morgan, would not like chloroform if it would harm the baby. His heart was set on this child and everyone was looking for it. Andrew gathered himself together and replied that the anesthetic would not affect the baby and that both would be fine.

The pale whitish spread over the newborn's soft body led Andrew to conclude that the baby must be suffering from asphyxia or pallida, a condition caused by a lack of oxygen supply to the body. Andrew hastily tried to recall a similar case he had seen in a Samaritan and recalled the way he was treated. He asked the midwife to bring him a bowl of both hot and cold water.
The midwife went to the kitchen and followed the doctor's orders. Andrew then put the baby on the blanket and began a special breathing method. After this, the doctor dipped the child in each bowl one by one. They continued the examination for more than fifteen minutes without any positive reaction from the child's lifeless body. A desperate sense of defeat surrounded him but he refused to give up.
The midwife was watching the doctor's antics with great surprise. The doctor recalled the longing that Susan had for a child, that her mother had for a child, and all that seemed futile to her now and beyond repair. The midwife begged her not to go along with this madness and face the fact
