The story 'The Address' is about the human plight of the post-war. The story tells of how a daughter goes to her native place in Holland in search of her mother's belongings after the war. At the beginning of the story, it is described how the heroine was given a cold welcome when she went to her native place after the war in search of her mother's belongings.

A woman opened the door after ringing the bell of house number 46 in Marconi street. On being introduced, the woman kept looking at him silently. There was no mark of identification on his face. The woman was wearing her mother's green knit cardigan. The narrator could understand that she had made no mistake. He asked the woman if she knew her mother. The woman could not deny this.

The narrator wanted to talk to him for some time. But the woman carefully closed the door. The narrator stayed there for a while and then left. The memories of the narrator's bygone days come to light in the subsequent sections. His mother had provided the address during the war years earlier. She went home for a few days. He found that various things were missing.

At that time, his mother told him about Mrs. Dorling. She was an old acquaintance of the narrator's mother. Recently, he had extended contact with her and she was visiting there regularly. Every time she used to leave their house, she used to take something home with her.

She told that she wants to save all her good assets. The next day, the narrator saw Mrs. Dorling leaving their home with a heavy suitcase. He had a fleeting glimpse of Mrs. Dorling's face. He asked his mother if the woman lived far away. At the time, the narrator's mother told of the address: Number 46, Marconi Street. Several days later, after the war, the narrator was eager to take a record of the properties that should still be at No. 46, Marconi Street. With this intention she went to the given address.

The last part of the story describes the second journey of the narrator. As the narrator's first visit did not yield any results, he made plans to leave once again. Interestingly, a fifteen-year-old girl opened the door for him. His mother was not at home. The narrator expressed a desire to wait for him. The girl went on the road with him. The narrator saw an old-fashioned iron candle holder hanging next to the mirror."

The girl made him sit in the living room and went inside. The narrator was horrified to find herself in a room she knew and didn't know. She found herself in the midst of familiar things which she wanted to see again but which disturbed her in a strange environment. He didn't have the courage to look around. But he no longer wanted to take over them. She got up, went to the door and left the room. She decided to forget the address and moved on.

वर्णनकर्ता कुछ समय के लिए उससे बात करना चाहता था। लेकिन महिला ने सावधानी से दरवाजा बंद कर लिया। कथावाचक कुछ देर वहीं रुका और फिर वहां से चला गया। आगे के खण्डों में कथावाचक के बीते दिनों की यादें प्रकाश में आती हैं। उसकी माँ ने वर्षों पहले युद्ध के दौरान पता प्रदान किया था। वह कुछ दिनों के लिए घर गई थी। उसने पाया कि विभिन्न चीजें गायब थीं।

उस समय, उसकी माँ ने उसे श्रीमती डोरलिंग के बारे में बताया। वह कथावाचक की माँ की पुरानी परिचित थी। हाल ही में, उसने उसके साथ संपर्क बढ़ाया था और वह नियमित रूप से वहां आ रही थी। हर बार जब वह उनके घर से निकलती थी तो अपने साथ कुछ न कुछ घर ले जाती थी।

लड़की ने उसे लिविंग रूम में बिठाया और अंदर चली गई। वर्णनकर्ता खुद को एक ऐसे कमरे में पाकर डर गई जिसे वह जानती थी और नहीं जानती थी। उसने खुद को परिचित चीजों के बीच में पाया जिसे वह फिर से देखना चाहती थी लेकिन जिसने उसे अजीब माहौल में परेशान किया। उसके चारों ओर देखने की हिम्मत नहीं थी। लेकिन उसे अब उन पर अधिकार करने की इच्छा नहीं थी। वह उठी, दरवाजे पर चली गई और कमरे से निकल गई। उसने पता भूल जाने का निश्चय किया और आगे बढ़ गई।
