नायक एक ग्यारह साल का लड़का है, जो अपने परिवार में व्याकुलता के कारण घर से भाग गया था। वह कन्याकुमारी एक्सप्रेस द्वारा एक छोटा बंडल लेकर चेन्नई सेंट्रल पर उतरे।

उन्होंने कुछ देर एक प्लेटफॉर्म पर आराम किया और फिर एक बेंच पर बैठ गए। लोगों की भीड़ देखकर वह हैरान रह गया। उन्होंने देखा कि लोग बड़ी भीड़ में थे। बार-बार की जाने वाली घोषणा ने उनका ध्यान खींचा, उन्होंने परिवेश को अस्त-व्यस्त पाया।

Velu was sad and sad. He had nothing but some peanuts and jaggery. He went to Kannur for a day and then went to Chennai by train. He slept on the floor near the door.

The girl went up to a bridge, from where Velu peeped through the railing. He advised him not to get caught as they were passing near the Central Jail. She went ahead carrying a sack on her shoulder. Velu was curious to know what she was carrying in it yet she did not dare to ask.

Velu realized that it was unbearable to walk barefoot on the road while he could easily move around the village. He tried to walk in the shadows and was perfectly in sync with the girl.

It took about an hour to reach the building where the wedding ceremony was going on. She took him behind her in a dustbin which was smelly. He threw a vada towards her. When he saw that he was hesitant, he told her that he did not have money to buy food.

Velu surrendered to the intense intensity of hunger. He asked if he was coming along or wanted to wait. He was aware of the fact that he could not manage alone so he ran after her.

He asked his name and then both of them started towards his house. They saw that the huts were made of metal sheets, tyres, bricks, wood and plastic. He told her that the houses in his village were made of mud and palm leaves.

He kept his entire sack and picked up another sack. He gave her shoes to wear.

He was surprised by the usefulness of the dustbin for the girl. He knew the job of working in the landlord's field and grazing the cows. He asked if there were any fields. Jaya told him that there were no fields. He described himself as a waste picker.

He further said that they were selling their garbage for money. He reprimanded her for taking too long to make a decision. Velu was very optimistic so he agreed to work. He knew he could move on to a new and better job in the future.
