नाटक दो पात्रों के इर्द-गिर्द घूमता है, डेरी, चौदह साल का एक छोटा लड़का, और मिस्टर लैम्ब, एक बूढ़ा। एसिड छलकने के कारण डेरी का चेहरा एक तरफ जल गया और मिस्टर लैम्ब ने युद्ध के दौरान एक बम विस्फोट में अपना पैर गंवा दिया। डेरी प्रतिकारक हैं और जीवन के प्रति उनका दृष्टिकोण बहुत नकारात्मक है, जबकि श्रीमान लैम्ब आशावादी हैं।

एक दिन डेरी मिस्टर लैम्ब के बगीचे में टहलते हुए गए और उन्हें वहीं पाया। वे दोनों बातें करने लगे। श्रीमान लैम्ब ने डैरी को सांत्वना देने की कोशिश की और उससे किसी भी बात से न डरने को कहा। इस पर डेरी ने कहा कि वह डरे नहीं बल्कि उसके जले हुए चेहरे के कारण लोग उससे डरते थे। उन्होंने या तो उसकी उपेक्षा की या उस पर दया की। उन्होंने उसे बदसूरत कहा और उसका मजाक उड़ाया। श्रीमान लैम्ब ने अपना उदाहरण देकर डेरी को सांत्वना दी। उन्होंने कहा कि बच्चे उन्हें 'लेमी लैम्ब' कहते हैं, लेकिन उन्हें इसका बुरा नहीं लगा। उन्होंने डेरी को जीवन की कठोर वास्तविकताओं का बहादुरी से सामना करने के लिए कहा।

श्रीमान लैम्ब ने डेरी को समझाने की कोशिश की कि यह एक व्यक्ति की आंतरिक सुंदरता है जो मायने रखती है। लेकिन डेरी नहीं माने। उन्होंने कहा कि यहां तक कि उनकी मां ने भी उन्हें चेहरे के दूसरी तरफ किस किया। उसे इस बात का पछतावा था कि वह अपना सारा जीवन आधे चेहरे के साथ गुजारेगा। मिस्टर लैम्ब ने उन्हें बताया कि उनका पूरा शरीर काम करने की स्थिति में है। इसलिए आधा जले हुए चेहरे के कारण उसे अपंग महसूस नहीं करना चाहिए।

श्रीमान लैम्ब ने डैरी से कहा कि वे इतनी सारी दिलचस्प चीज़ों को अपने आस-पास देखें। उन्होंने अपना उदाहरण दिया। व्यस्त रहने के लिए, उसने बगीचे में भिनभिनाती मधुमक्खियों और फूलों को देखा। उन्होंने पक्षियों और कीड़ों की आवाज सुनी और धूप में बैठने का आनंद लिया। इस पर डेरी ने कहा कि वह भी एक बड़े लॉन के साथ एक बड़ा घर बनाना चाहते हैं। श्रीमान लैम्ब ने उसे अपने साथ रहने की पेशकश की लेकिन डेरी वहाँ से चला गया क्योंकि उसकी माँ प्रतीक्षा कर रही थी। जाने से पहले, डेरी ने वापस आने का वादा किया।

डेरी ने घर जाकर अपनी माँ को मिस्टर लैम्ब के बारे में बताया। उसने उसे उससे मिलने नहीं जाने की चेतावनी दी। लेकिन डेरी ऐसा करने के लिए दृढ़ थे। इस बीच, श्रीमान लैम्ब पेड़ से केकड़े सेब तोड़ने के लिए सीढ़ी पर चढ़ गए। वह नीचे गिर गया और मर गया। जब डेरी मिस्टर लैम्ब के पास लौटा तो उसने पाया कि वह जमीन पर मृत पड़ा है। हालांकि डेरी ने अपना एकमात्र दोस्त खो दिया, फिर भी वह दुनिया का सामना करने के लिए मजबूत और सकारात्मक बन गया।

The play revolves around two characters, Derry, a young boy of fourteen, and Mr Lamb, an old man. The acid spill caused Derry to burn on one side of his face and Mr Lamb lost his leg in a bombing during the war. Derry is repulsive and has a very negative outlook on life, while Mr Lamb is optimistic.

One day Derry went for a walk in Mr Lamb's garden and found him there. They both started talking. Mr Lamb tried to console Derry and told him not to be afraid of anything. To this Derry said that he was not scared but people were afraid of him because of his burnt face. They either ignored him or took pity on him. They called her ugly and made fun of her. Mr Lamb consoled Derry by giving his example. He said the kids called him 'Lamy Lamb', but he didn't mind it. He asked Derry to face the harsh realities of life bravely.

Mr Lamb tries to convince Derry that it is a person's inner beauty that matters. But Derry did not agree. He said that even his mother kissed him on the other side of the face. He regretted that he would spend the rest of his life with half a face. Mr Lamb told him that his entire body was in working condition. So he should not feel crippled because of a half-burnt face.

Mr Lamb asked Derry to look for so many interesting things around him. He gave his own example. To keep busy, he observed the buzzing bees and flowers in the garden. He listened to the sound of birds and insects and enjoyed sitting in the sun. To this Derry said that he also wants to build a big house with a big lawn. Mr Lamb offered her to stay with him but Derry left as his mother was waiting. Before leaving, Derry promised to come back.

Derry went home and told his mother about Mr Lamb. He warned her not to visit him. But Derry was determined to do so. Meanwhile, Mr. Lamb climbed the ladder to pluck the crab apple from the tree. He fell down and died. When Derry returned to Mr Lamb, he found him lying dead on the ground. Although Derry lost his only friend, he grew strong and positive to face the world.
