This thought pleases and satisfies him because he is deprived of all these things.

On a winter evening, a pedestrian finds a hut by the side of the road. He knocks on the door asking for a shelter. He is surprised to get the warm welcome from the host. He is offered not only shelter but food and tobacco. Crofter entertains her with a game of 'majolies' and shares with her the secret of earning her thirty kronor by selling milk.

The next day when they both leave the house, the peddler comes back and steals the money. He decides to walk through the forest instead of walking on the road to avoid being caught. But as night falls, he loses his way in the forest. He is completely exhausted, hungry and cold. Then he realizes that he may be roaming around the same place.
