The author was part of the Student on Ice expedition which was visiting Antarctica. The team traversed nine time zones, three bodies of water and several ecological regions on a ship, to reach the Land of Wonder. A trip to Antarctica, around which Gondwana once existed, is like going back to the past. It is like re-watching history. There are clear indications of where mankind has come from and clear indications of where it is headed. Antarctica is home to a wide variety of animals—blue whales can be found dwarfs and mites. Then, there are big icebergs like countries. But there are no signs of human life, no trees, no billboards and no buildings.

Human civilizations have barely been seconds on the geologic clock, yet they have created a ruckus with their various movements. The rapidly increasing population and various thoughtless activities of mankind have made it embroiled in a fight with other species for limited resources. These climate changes can adversely affect humans and lead to the end of the world.

The Students on Ice campaign was started to sensitize the youth who still have the idealism to save the world. In fact, seeing glaciers recede and ice shelves collapsing will make them understand that global warming is a real threat. It is difficult to imagine or be affected by the melting of the polar ice caps sitting in our living rooms and therefore this visual life-changing experience is significant.
