एक बेटी के रूप में, अपनी माँ को खोने का विचार ही उसे परेशान करता है और अपने चिंताजनक विचारों से दूर जाने के लिए, वह उन पेड़ों की ओर देखना शुरू कर देती है जो कार चलाते समय दौड़ते हुए प्रतीत होते हैं। वह छोटे बच्चों को भी अपने घरों से बाहर खेलने के लिए भागते हुए देखती है। यह उसे यौवन और सुंदरता की याद दिलाता है।

इसके विपरीत, उसकी माँ की उम्र बढ़ रही है। वह बूढ़ी हो गई है और मृत्यु की ओर बढ़ रही है। यह उसे असुरक्षा की भावना से भर देता है। छोटे बच्चों और हरे पेड़ों के विपरीत, माँ ने अपनी युवावस्था और आकर्षण खो दिया है और सर्दियों के चाँद की तरह पीला हो गया है।

कवयित्री अपने बचपन के वही पुराने दर्द और डर को महसूस करती है जब वह हवाई अड्डे पर अपनी माँ को अलविदा कहती है, लेकिन वह एक मुस्कान के साथ ऐसे सभी भावनाओं को छुपाती है जो उसकी माँ को दिलासा देती है कि वह जल्द ही वापस आ जाएगी। इसलिए जब कवि स्वयं वृद्धावस्था के भय से भरा होता है, तब भी उसकी मुस्कान उसकी माँ को जीवित रहने की आशा देती है।
