कहानी द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध के समय की है। डॉ. सदाओ एक जापानी डॉक्टर हैं जो एक विशेषज्ञ सर्जन और वैज्ञानिक हैं। वह युद्ध के एक अमेरिकी कैदी को अपनी दहलीज पर पाता है, जो खून बह रहा है और मौत के कगार पर है। शुरुआत में, डॉ. सदाओ और उनकी पत्नी हाना बेहोश आदमी को वापस समुद्र में फेंकने की सोचते हैं लेकिन ऐसा नहीं कर पाते। अंत में, वे उसे घर ले आए। डॉ. सदाओ अपनी पत्नी की मदद से उनका ऑपरेशन करते हैं। उन दोनों को नौकरों के विरोध का सामना करना पड़ता है क्योंकि वे आदमी को साफ करने से इनकार करते हैं और विरोध में चले जाते हैं।

आदमी धीरे-धीरे ठीक होने लगता है। एक दिन डॉ. सदाओ को जनरल से मिलने जाना है। डॉ. सदाओ जनरल का इलाज करते हुए उन्हें अपने घर में अमेरिकी के बारे में बताते हैं। जनरल ने अमेरिकी को चुपचाप मारने के लिए अपने व्यक्तिगत हत्यारों को भेजने का वादा किया। डॉ. सदाओ अपनी पत्नी को इस योजना के बारे में नहीं बताते हैं और तीन रात तक हत्यारों का इंतजार करते रहते हैं। लेकिन वे सामने नहीं आते।

इस समय तक, अमेरिकी ठीक हो गया है। अब डॉ. सदाओ ने उसे समुद्र में एक असुरक्षित द्वीप पर भेजने का फैसला किया। वह उसे एक नाव, एक मशाल, ढेर सारा खाना और पानी और एक टॉर्च देता है। वह उसे उस द्वीप पर रहने और एक कोरियाई नाव की प्रतीक्षा करने का निर्देश देता है। वह उससे यह भी कहता है कि अगर उसके पास नाव चलाने से पहले भोजन खत्म हो जाता है तो वह उसे दो फ्लैश का संकेत देगा।

डॉ. सदाओ को फिर से जनरल ने बुलाया और इस बार उनका ऑपरेशन किया जाना है। डॉ. सदाओ जनरल को बताते हैं कि अमेरिकी भाग गया है। इस सब पर जनरल चुप रहते हैं। अंत में, डॉ. सदाओ को प्रकाश की कोई चमक नहीं दिखाई देती है और उन्हें पता चलता है कि कैदी सुरक्षित बच निकला है।

The story is set at the time of World War II. Dr. Sadao is a Japanese doctor who is a specialist surgeon and scientist. He finds an American prisoner of war on his doorstep, bleeding and on the verge of death. In the beginning, Dr. Sadao and his wife Hana plan to throw the unconscious man back into the sea but fail to do so. In the end, they brought him home. Dr. Sadao operates them with the help of his wife. They both face opposition from the servants as they refuse to clean the man and walk away in protest.

The man slowly begins to recover. One day Dr. Sadao has to visit the general. Dr. Sadao treats the general and tells him about the American in his home. The general promised to send his personal assassins to kill the American quietly. Dr. Sadao does not tell his wife about the plan and waits for the killers for three nights. But they don't show up.

By this time, the American has recovered. Now Dr. Sadao decides to send her to an unsafe island in the sea. He gives her a boat, a torch, a lot of food and water and a torch. He instructs her to stay on that island and wait for a Korean boat. He also tells her that he will signal two flashes if he runs out of food before he can sail the boat.

Dr. Sadao was called again by the general and this time he has to be operated upon. Dr. Sadao tells the general that the American has fled. The general remains silent on all this. In the end, Dr. Sadao sees no flashes of light and learns that the prisoner has escaped safely.
