'Charlie is convinced that Grand Central Station has levels three, not just two. Charlie's psychotherapist Sam Weiner and his friends think his delusions are a 'wake-dream-fulfillment' and, like his stamp collection, a temporary refuge from a world full of insecurities, fear, war, and anxiety.

Charlie describes how one evening while rushing home from the office, he decides to take the subway from Grand Central Station, and gets lost. He eventually finds himself in a strange third level filled with spittoons, gaslights, an ancient locomotive and people whose appearance and clothing seem strange. He learns that he has somehow gone back to 1894, which is confirmed by the newspaper's headline story on President Cleveland.

Charlie tries to buy tickets to Galsburg, Illinois, a wonderful city... big old frame houses, expansive lawns and tremendous trees..., and where summer evenings were twice as long and people lived in peace and harmony. But the clerk does not accept his 1950 currency and so he leaves the station.

The next day during his lunch break, Charlie withdraws almost all of his savings and buys old-fashioned currency to buy tickets to the 1894 Galsburg. But he can never find the third level entrance at Grand Central Station again. Charlie finds evidence that the third level actually exists when he learns of a letter dated July 18, 1894 from his psychiatrist Sam Weiner addressed to his grandfather in Galsburg, Illinois, which appears to be the third level. There was no doubt as he appeared.
