'Deep Water' is an excerpt from Men and the Mountains by William O. Douglas. It is an autobiographical account of how the author developed his fear of water and after that, how he finally overcame it. He tells that his hatred of water began when he was three or four years old and that his father took him to a beach in California. There he fell down from the waves and almost drowned in the water. When he was ten or eleven years old, he joined the Y.M.C.A. Pool for learning to swim.

One day, as he was sitting alone by the pool, a boy who had healed a large wound picked him up and threw him into the deep end of the pool. He immediately went downstairs. He was scared, but thought of a strategy to save his life. He decided to hit the bottom and take a big jump to come to the surface and lay flat on it and then paddle to the edge of the pool. But it seemed his way down was too long.

Before he even touched the bottom, his lungs were about to explode. Although he tried to make a big jump, he came up very slowly. As a result, he went down for the second time. His lungs started hurting and he felt dizzy. He jumped, his feet touched down but it didn't make any difference. When he went down for the third time, he sucked up a lot of water, trying to breathe air. Then all his efforts stopped and he blacked out. He was overwhelmed with fear and eventually fainted.

After this incident, his fear of water increased and he did not go swimming, fishing or any other water sports for many years. Finally on October 1, he decided to overcome his fear of water. He hired a trainer to learn to swim. He started practicing swimming. Slowly he shed some part of the terror that had gripped him. The instructor tied a belt around her waist and attached her to a pulley with a rope. The writer practiced day by day until he started to regain his confidence. He was able to swim the length of the pool on his own. Although the instructor was satisfied, the author felt that on several occasions his old fear of water would return. So, he continued to swim in various water bodies until he was convinced that he had overcome his fear.

Finally, to test whether he had lost the last vestiges of fear, Douglas went from Tieton to Conrad Meadows, down the Conrad Creek Trail to Mead Glacier, and camped in high meadows along the shores of Warm Lake. As he experienced the horror of death, his will to live grew most intensely. This made him fearless and confident.
