In the short play "The Proposal", Anton Chekhov describes the strange courtship of Lomov, who seeks to marry his neighbor's daughter. Lomov, 35, has long been a neighbor of Chubukov. He is a landlord who has inherited property from his aunt. Although he is well fed and healthy, he is hypochondriac. He is suffering from palpitations and sleeplessness due to his nervousness. They have passed an important stage of marriage.

He now knows that if he will seek the perfect woman or true love, he will never marry. That's why he is now desperate to marry Natalya. He thinks she is not bad in appearance and has some education. He wants to lead a stable and regular life. So, he goes to his neighbor Chubukov's house in a formal suit early in the morning. Chubukov is shocked at Lomov's unexpected arrival in formal attire. Lomov asks her for Natalya's hand in marriage. Chubukov is also looking for a suitable man for his 25-year-old daughter Natalya.

As the father of an eldest daughter, he immediately happily allows Natalya to marry him. He has been invited to the room. Lomov panics and instead of making his offer, starts banging about the bush. When he says that her Ox Meadows touches her birch woods, she begins to argue with him about the ownership of that piece of land. His father notices that they are arguing, he joins, and then, sends Lomov- out of the house. Chubukov then tells his daughter that Lomov was there to propose to her. Natalya regrets and asks her father to bring her back. Lomov arrives and she asks him about his hunting schedule.

He says that he will start hunting after the harvest because his best dog has become limp. At this point, Natalya again refutes him, claiming that her dog Leap is better than her dog, Guess. Thus the fight resumes until Ladmov faints in a chair from over-excitement. Seeing him calm and motionless, Natalya thinks he is dead and becomes hysterical. At last Lomov regains consciousness and Chubukov forces them to kiss each other and accept the marriage proposal. Immediately after the kiss, Natalya and Lomov begin to quarrel. Chubukov screams for champagne because he wants to celebrate their wedding and at the same time he feels free from the burden of his eldest daughter.
