On the very first day an unspoken promise was made. Manisha and I knew that we would be great friends.
We always walked together on the quiet railway tracks or in the back garden of the school. We would go on vacation in the forest, stay together in Mount Abu and participate in Navratri celebrations. She was tall and thin. I was short and muscular. She was good at maths, I loved reading novels.
She was a good player and attracted me to sports. We were talking, singing, arguing and crying while sitting on the same bench. Three wonderful years flowed with joy, growth, discovery and intense emotions. Manisha's father (promoted to the job) and had to go to Assam.
As promised, Manisha and I wrote letters occasionally. In those days the question of making long distance telephone calls did not arise. His last letter came when I was in BSc (3rd year of Science). She fell in love with a doctor. He married her and she gave birth to a beautiful girl.
I immediately wrote back but got no response. I wrote (the letter) many times. Eventually my letters came back with a coin that read, "Address unknown." I was so worried about it! Get married at the age of 19 and have a baby! I knew she would be a wonderful mother.
I got my MSc (Science Post Graduate) degree. Started working as a lecturer and got married. My kids grew up, went to college and my daughter is now a mother. I often used to talk to Manisha about my friendship. My family members knew all about my best friend. On a sunny day in April 2005, the telephone rang. "Have a wife?" "Yes" "Is the wife Bhatia?"
