In this story writer Gavin Maxwell tells us about his pet. After the death of her dog, Johnny, she thought she had another pet. In early 1956 he traveled to southern Iraq. There he saw that some Arab people kept a beaver. Then, he even thought of being a beaver. He told this to his friend. His mail was due; So, accompanied by a friend he went to Basra to get "their mail". His friend collected his mail and left.

After they left, they found a sack which contained something. The sack was for the narrator and contained an otter. The narrator named it Mizbil. At first the beaver slept on the floor, but soon he entered the bed until the servant had bought tea. When he went to the bathroom he happily hopped in the bathtub and rolled over. He was very surprised when the narrator found him struggling with the water tap. He had learned to turn on the tap. He spent most of his time playing with rubber balls and marbles.

He was living in Basra, while he had to move to England and then Camsafearna. But the problem was that some airlines did not allow the transportation of animals. Therefore, the narrator had to choose a different flight that allowed the animals to board. As a result, Mizbill was packaged in a box of its size. Then the narrator went for a meal. When he returned to his room, he saw blood coming out of the air holes. He got scared.

He quickly opened it and saw that Midge was almost unconscious. He removed all the sharp edges from the box and put it back in the box. Time was passing and he managed to hire a taxi. His flight was only ten minutes. So he sat on the back seat of the taxi and put the box in his lap. Somehow he managed to catch the flight and he boarded the plane. The air hostess was somewhat friendly and allowed the narrator to hold the beaver on her lap. But as soon as the narrator opened the box, the beaver disappeared into the plane. This causes panic among the passengers. But the airhostess helps him locate Midge again.

People in London did not recognize the beaver. They used blind guesses to identify the animal. The most shocking incident happened when a laborer digging a pit in the street. Seeing the animal, he put down his tools and when the narrator came to him, he cried out, What must it be?
