सिपाही ने कहा, "मैं मरने के लायक हूं। मुझे मारने की जरूरत है, लेकिन जब तक मैं इस सुरंग को खत्म नहीं कर लेता तब तक प्रतीक्षा करें।" युवक इंतजार करने को तैयार हो गया। एक असंभव सा प्रतीत होने वाले कार्य के लिए सैनिक को प्रतिदिन इतनी मेहनत करते देख वह चकित रह गया। अपने शत्रु के दृढ़ निश्चय को देखकर यह युवक उसका आदर करने लगा। आखिरकार वह (जवान) भी इस आदमी की मदद करने लगा - उसके साथ खुदाई करके पत्थर उठाने लगा।
