कहानी की शुरुआती पंक्तियाँ थूथन बच्चे हाथी गोलू के बारे में बात करती हैं। उसके पास सूंड नहीं बल्कि एक उभरी हुई नाक थी। गोलू जिज्ञासु था और जानना चाहता था कि दूसरे जानवर अपने जीवन का प्रबंधन कैसे कर रहे हैं।

उसने शुतुरमुर्ग से पूछा कि क्या वह कभी अन्य पक्षियों की तरह उड़ता था। उसने दरियाई घोड़े की लाल आँखों और एक जिराफ़ की धब्बेदार त्वचा के बारे में पूछताछ की। उनके कठिन सवालों का जवाब सबके पास नहीं था।

एक बार उसने मैना से मगरमच्छ के भोजन के बारे में पूछा और उसने उसे घास वाली लिम्पोपो नदी की यात्रा करने का सुझाव दिया। उन्होंने घर जाकर नदी जाने की अपनी योजना की जानकारी दी। वह अपने लिए खाना लेकर जाता था।

रास्ते में उसकी मुलाकात अजगर से हुई और उसने मगरमच्छ के बारे में पूछा। उसने कोई जवाब नहीं दिया लेकिन गोलू ने उसे शाखा के चारों ओर चक्कर लगाने में मदद की।

उसे नदी तक पहुँचने में कुछ दिन लगे। उसने लकड़ी का एक लट्ठा देखा जो वास्तव में एक मगरमच्छ था। उसने वही प्रश्न फेंका और मगरमच्छ ने उसे एक मान लिया।

इसके बाद उन्होंने उनके खाने के बारे में पूछा। मगरमच्छ ने जवाब दिया कि वह उसे कान में बताएगा और उसे धोखा देकर उसकी नाक में छेद करके उसे अपने खाने में खाने के लिए पकड़ लिया। तभी उसे बचाने के लिए अजगर दिखाई दिया, मगरमच्छ उसे गहरे पानी में ले जाने की कोशिश कर रहा था।

नाक खिंचती रही क्योंकि उसे एक तरफ से मगरमच्छ ने और दूसरी तरफ से अजगर ने खींचा था। अपनी फैली हुई नाक को ठंडा करने के लिए गोलू नदी के किनारे बैठ गया।

दो दिनों के बाद, उसने इसे मृत मक्खी को मारने के लिए इस्तेमाल किया, और फिर घास का एक बड़ा बंडल तोड़ दिया। जब अजगर ने अपनी लंबी नाक होने की ताकत के बारे में बताया। गोलू को डांटा गया और उस पर कीचड़ उछाल कर थप्पड़ मार दिया। इस प्रकार गोलू ने एक लंबी सूंड होने के लाभ को महसूस किया और इसके बारे में आभारी महसूस किया।

The opening lines of the story talk about the muzzle baby elephant Golu. He did not have a trunk but a protruding nose. Golu was curious and wanted to know how other animals were managing their lives.

He asked the ostrich if it ever flew like other birds. He inquired about the red eyes of a hippopotamus and the mottled skin of a giraffe. Not everyone had the answer to his tough questions.

Once he asked Maina about crocodile food and he suggested her to visit the grassy Limpopo river. He went home and informed about his plan to go to the river. He used to take food for himself.

On the way he met a python and asked him about the crocodile. He did not answer but Golu helped him to go round the branch.

It took him a few days to reach the river. He saw a log of wood which was actually a crocodile. He threw the same question and the crocodile accepted it as one.

After this he asked about their food. The crocodile replied that he would tell her in the ear and tricked her by piercing her nose and caught her to eat in his own food. Then the python appeared to save him, the crocodile was trying to take him to the deep water.

The nose kept on pulling as it was pulled from one side by the crocodile and from the other side by the python. Golu sat down on the bank of the river to cool his protruding nose.

After two days, he used it to kill the dead fly, and then plucked a large bundle of grass. When the dragon told about the power of having his long nose. Golu was scolded and slapped by throwing mud at him. Thus Golu realized the benefit of having a long trunk and felt grateful about it.
