अंडे से ग्रब निकलते हैं। कार्यकर्ता उनकी देखभाल करते हैं। सैनिक उनकी रक्षा करते हैं। बाद में ग्रब कम से कम तीन सप्ताह तक बिना भोजन या गतिविधि के कोकून बन जाते हैं। फिर, कोकून से परिपूर्ण चींटियाँ दिखाई देती हैं। चींटियाँ फिर बूढ़ी चीटियों से प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त करती हैं।

भृंग, हरी मक्खी भी एंथिल में निवास करते हैं क्योंकि उनमें से कुछ सुखद गंध देते हैं, अन्य मीठा रस देते हैं, और उनमें से कुछ पालतू जानवर हैं। हरी मक्खी शहद देती है और इसे चींटी की गाय कहते हैं।
