मुख्य किरदार अब्बू खान अल्मोड़ा में रहता था। उसने अपनी बकरियों की रक्षा की और उनके नाम रखे। वह बकरियों को चराने के लिए ले गया और रात में उन्हें जंजीर से बांध दिया।

वह उन्हें लाया, रसीली घास और लाभ, फिर भी उन्होंने उसकी झोपड़ी को छोड़ना पसंद किया। वह बकरियों को अपने बच्चे के रूप में मानता था, फिर भी वह उन्हें भागने से रोकने में असफल रहा। पहाड़ियों में बकरियों को स्वतंत्रता पसंद थी और खान के पास सबसे अच्छी पहाड़ी नस्लें थीं लेकिन उन्हें एक पुराने भेड़िये ने मार दिया था।

खान इतना देखभाल करने वाला था कि वह उनके दुर्भाग्य को स्वीकार करने के लिए तैयार नहीं था। वह उदास था कि वह बकरियों की हत्या को नहीं रोक सका। एक दिन उसने निश्चय किया कि अब वह बकरियाँ नहीं रखेगा।

लेकिन अकेला होने और पालतू जानवर न होने के कारण, उसने एक युवा और सुंदर बकरी खरीदी। वह चाहता था कि इसे उसके साथ रहने के लिए अनुकूलित किया जाए। उसने उसका नाम चांदनी रखा क्योंकि वह बर्फ की तरह सफेद थी जिसमें छोटे सींग और चमकीली आंखें थीं। उसने उसकी कहानियाँ सुनाईं और वह उन्हें बड़ी दिलचस्पी से सुनता है।

अब्बू खान को यकीन था कि चांदनी उसे कभी नहीं छोड़ेगी क्योंकि वे सालों तक साथ रहे। उनकी राय के ठीक विपरीत, चांदनी खुद को मुक्त करना चाहती थी। सूरज की रोशनी में नहाते हुए पहाड़ियों की सुंदरता से वह मंत्रमुग्ध हो गईं।

वह उस रस्सी से नफरत करती थी जिससे वह बंधी थी। एक बार उसने खाना बंद कर दिया और इस तरह कमजोर हो गई। अब्बू खान यह सुनकर टूट गया कि चांदनी जाना चाहती है। उसने उसे एक खतरनाक भेड़िये के बारे में बताया।

फिर भी वह विचलित नहीं हुई और उसने कहा कि वह एक जोड़ी सींग से खुद को बचा लेगी। जैसा कि अब्बू खान उसे सुरक्षित चाहता था लेकिन उसके तर्क ने उसे नाराज कर दिया। उसने उसे एक छोटी सी झोपड़ी में धकेल दिया और दरवाजा बंद कर दिया। हर प्रयास उसे मना नहीं सका और वह भाग गई।

पहाड़ियों को देखकर वह उत्साहित महसूस कर रही थी। उसे ऐसा लग रहा था कि जैसे वे उसका स्वागत कर रहे हैं, उसने उसकी स्वतंत्रता को गले लगा लिया। उसने प्रकृति के उपहारों की तुलना अब्बू खान के परिसर के कारागार से की।

वह जंगली बकरियों के किसी झुण्ड में भी शामिल नहीं हुई जो स्वयं को बलि चढ़ाते थे। शाम हो रही थी, चारों ओर अंधेरा था। तभी उसने चमकदार शोर सुना। वह एक भेड़िये की उपस्थिति से डरती थी।

फिर उसके मन में विवाद आया कि अब्बू खान के पास वापस जाना है या उसके डर से लड़ना है। डरावना भेड़िया चांदनी के सामने आया। उसने एक सच्चे सैनिक की तरह व्यवहार किया जिसने अपनी लड़ाई नहीं छोड़ी।

यहां तक कि जब वह पराक्रम से पहले कमजोर थी, उसने अपनी पूरी ताकत से लड़ने का फैसला किया। भोर तक लड़ाई चलती रही। सुबह की नमाज पास की एक मस्जिद से सुनी गई।

दोनों खून से लथपथ थे। क्रूर होने के कारण यह माना जाता था कि भेड़िया लड़ाई जीत गया। और एक बुद्धिमान बूढ़े पक्षी ने विश्वास के साथ घोषणा की कि चांदनी ने द्वंद्व जीत लिया।

The main character Abbu Khan lived in Almora. He protected his goats and named them. He took the goats for grazing and chained them at night.

He brought them, lush grass and profit, yet they preferred to leave his hut. He considered the goats as his children, yet he failed to stop them from escaping. The goats loved freedom in the hills and Khan had the best hill breeds but was killed by an old wolf.

Khan was so caring that he was unwilling to accept their misfortune. He was sad that he could not stop the killing of the goats. One day he decided that he would no longer keep goats.

But being alone and not having a pet, he bought a young and beautiful goat. He wanted it to be adapted to live with him. He named her Chandni because she was white as snow with tiny horns and bright eyes. He told her stories and he listens to them with great interest.

Abbu Khan was sure that Chandni would never leave him as they were together for years. Quite contrary to his opinion, Chandni wanted to free herself. She was mesmerized by the beauty of the hills while bathing in the sunlight.

She hated the rope she was tied to. Once she stopped eating and thus became weak. Abbu Khan breaks down hearing that Chandni wants to go. He told her about a dangerous wolf.

Yet she was not deterred and said that she would defend herself with a pair of horns. As Abbu Khan wanted her safe but her reasoning angered her. He pushed her into a small hut and closed the door. Every attempt could not convince her and she ran away.

She was feeling excited seeing the hills. It seemed to him that as they were welcoming him, he embraced his freedom. He compared the gifts of nature with the prison in the premises of Abbu Khan.

She also did not join any herd of wild goats who sacrificed themselves. It was evening, it was dark all around. Then he heard a blaring noise. She was afraid of the presence of a wolf.

Then a dispute arose in his mind whether to go back to Abbu Khan or fight his fear. The scary wolf appeared in front of the moonlight. He behaved like a true soldier who did not give up his fight.

Even when she was weak before might, she decided to fight with all her might. The fight went on till morning. Morning prayers were heard from a nearby mosque.

Both were covered in blood. Being ferocious, it was believed that the wolf won the battle. And a wise old bird declared with confidence that the moonlight had won the duel.
