This is the story of a little boy who complains to his mother about his boredom. On a cold, rainy Saturday in October, he went down to the kitchen, where his mother read the newspaper and told her he was bored. His mother asked him to draw a picture with his new crayons, read one of his new library books, or play with his new toys. But the boy did all these activities and was still bored. Finally, the mother asked the child to look for a small circular red house with no windows or doors, a chimney above, and a star in the middle. When the boy's mother was a child, his grandmother asked his mother to search this strange little house.

The boy put on his raincoat, hat, scarf, wristbands and boots and set out in search of the red little house. Along the way, he met a postman and a police officer, but they both never saw a house as described by the little boy. Finally, the boy went to Mr. Fetzer's barn to ask about the house he was looking for. Mr. Fetzer advised the little boy to run to his gardens and look around to find what he was looking for. The little boy found out what he was looking for. He found a small red house at the foot of one of the apple trees in Mr. Fetzer's garden at the top of the hill. He put the apple in his raincoat pocket, ran all the way home, and showed his mother the apple. His mother cut the apple in half to show the star inside.
