The main character in the story is the youngest son of a poor and hard-working farmer who lives in a village in old Japan. Because he was small, weak, and smart, his parents sent him to the village priest for priestly training. The boy learns well and makes his master happy in almost every way, but he continues in an act of disobedience, drawing cats whenever possible. He was warned to stop but he continued. The boy's disobedience was stopped by an old priest who advised him to stop trying to become a priest and become an artist instead. The priest warns the boy to avoid large places at night and to keep small places. Confused by the strange warning, the boy reluctantly leaves his temple and walks to the next village, where there is a large temple, where he hopes to continue his religious training.
At night he arrives at the temple, which is deserted and covered only with thick dust and cobwebs. Little did he know that a bloodthirsty goblin had left the temple because he lived there. Earlier, soldiers entered the temple at night to kill Gobl, but the attempt did not survive. The unsuspecting boy sat quietly, waiting for the temple priests to appear. He notices large and white screens and amazing surfaces for drawing cats, and soon the drawing ink and brushes are ready. He draws cats without hesitation, without stopping until he is too tired to continue.
He remembers in his sleep the old priest's warning when he was asleep, so he crawled into a small cabinet and pulled the door open before going to sleep. Hours later, the boy woke up to the sound of screams and fights. As the fight intensified he was silently frightened, only to enter the room after daylight. He finds a goblin rat the size of a cow, soaked in blood and lying dead on a floor. As he scans the temple, he notices the cats' wet, blood-red mouths drawn on the screen. Suddenly he understands the priest's advice and realizes that his cats have destroyed the goblin in the cruel fight he heard. The boy later became a famous artist, and paintings of cats can still be seen in Japan.
