The writer once had the opportunity to visit the school of Miss Beam, whom he had heard a lot about before. When he entered the school, he saw a twelve-year-old girl with her eyes closed. An eight-year-old boy led her through the flower beds in the garden. The girl asked the boy about the writer. The boy seemed to be describing the writer to her, and they left. Then the writer went inside and saw Miss Beam. He asked her some questions about her teaching style. Miss Beam said she did not have much scholastic education. Students were taught only spelling, addition, subtraction, multiplication and writing. She said the aim of her organization was to sow the seeds of humanity and citizenship in children. He noticed that the children there were not healthy. He told Miss Beam about the girl he had seen before.

She said with a laugh that she was not really blind. Those with eyes covered with bandages were not really blind, and those with crutches were not crippled. It was just part of her system. This system made children sympathetic to the differently abled and appreciated the gift of life. He then introduced the writer to the girl and left the place. He asked her if she had tried to look. She replied that staring would be deceitful. She described her experience of acting blind and how she realized the struggle a blind man had to face. She said the 'blind day' was the worst day for her. The writer led her to walk. The writer described her surroundings. The author notes that the girl has become more thoughtful and sensitive. As he was leaving, Miss Beam came to see him.
