1. Monday morning
In this chapter, we are introduced to Swami, the central figure in the novel. He is often a boy of the year and a student of First Form (A), Albert Mission School, Malgudi. He is not one of the brightest students in the school. After delicious freedom and rest on Saturdays and Sundays, he doesn't like to go to school on Mondays. On Monday morning he is unable to concentrate on his studies.
We are also introduced to his close friends and his teachers. Among friends he is particularly close with Mani, a well-built personality who can break any body's neck with clubs at home. Among his teachers, there is the Christian Ebenezer, who always praises his religion and criticizes the Hindu gods. Swami objected to this and the teacher tried to break his left ear. Swami complains to his father, who gives his son a letter to the headmaster the next morning. However, this has no effect and things go on like we do.
2. Rajam and Manik
This chapter introduces us to Rajam, a newcomer to the class. He is the son of the Superintendent of Police, well prepared, intelligent and a good student. In the beginning, he is treated as a rival by Mani and is challenged to a fight. Swami is fascinated by her and is friendly with her. When there is no fighting and the two are reconciled, he is greatly relieved. Their friendship matures, the three continue to be together, and the rest are thrown out of this 'inner circle'.
3. Swami's grandmother
There are three sections in this chapter. In the first volume, we are given the characterization of Swami's grandmother, the way she spends her days and her 'room'. Swami tells him about his new friend Rajam and she tells him the story of Harishchandra, until he falls asleep. In the second section we are told about Swami's anxiety about going out and hanging out with his friends. As soon as his father left, Swami ran to his friends despite his mother's rebuke.
The third volume details Swami and Mani's visit to the Rajam's abode. They are deeply impressed by the toys he shows them, the respect he commands, and the way the colonel charges and brings snacks. However, the chapter ends on a comedy note; Rajam's restlessness at the hands of the cook.
4. 'What is a tail'?
Swami's friends were jealous of his friendship with Rajam. Therefore, they called him the "tail" of Rajam and refused to play or talk with him. Swami felt most wretched, isolated and unhappy.
5. Father's Room
This chapter can easily be divided into three parts. In the first part, Swami asks his father for permission to use his room as his room during his visit to Ra Jam in the afternoon and permission is granted. in the second part; It is the account of the journey itself. In the third part the scene shifts to the school. Someone has written Tail in capital letters on the blackboard. This leads to fierce fighting, until the headmaster arrives, separates Somu and Mani, at which point gets locked in a fierce fight, and restores order.
6. A Friend in Need
The chapter tells us how Rajam once again befriends Swami and Mani along with Matar, Somu and Shankar. This was done by inviting them all to his house, giving them lectures on friendship and giving them attractive gifts on becoming friends once again. Rajam did, in fact, act as a friend in his hour of need.
7. A New Arrival
The new arrival is Swami's younger brother. The atmosphere of pre-birth suspense, hustle and bustle is well brought to the fore. Swami failed to understand the meaning of going-on and why the lady doctor was taking the house as her own, and why she was being listened to by all concerned. He fell asleep in thought. However, he knew the next morning that he was having a baby.
8. Before the exam
This chapter deals with the approach of annual examinations and the trouble it causes for the owner. The father created a lot of ruckus in the house and made Swami study for hours. At school, all his friends seemed to have exam fever. There was no such thing as gossip and ruckus. It was rumored that the school dungeons knew all about the question papers and made frantic efforts to get some clues from him.
Mani went to him with brinjal gifts and went to the extent of asking him directly about the question papers. His answers were vague and general but Mani was completely satisfied. He told what he knew to Swami and they prepared accordingly.
9. School Break-up
It was the last day of the examination and after that the school was to be closed for the holidays. Swami came out of the examination hall twenty minutes ago and waited for others to come but no one came till the bell rang and then there was all this noise and glee. The headmaster addressed them briefly and announced that the school would remain closed till June 19 and would reopen on the 20th.
There was excitement and joy at the announcement, and then they started breaking the ink pots and destroying the stationer's articles, Swami participated in this crazy spree with joy. The fun continued till the school peon dispersed the fun-lovers.
