This is an excerpt from (from My Bones Memoirs by Colonel Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon of the Indian National Army). This essay records some of the unique qualities of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The author says that Subhas Chandra Bose will always be remembered for his stamina that took him across the ocean in search of an answer to India's independence. He had a multifaceted personality. Leaders of his time remembered him for his qualities. Rabindranath Tagore called him the Deshnayak leader of the country.
He followed the instructions given by Netaji. He was always concerned for the honour, welfare and comfort of his soldiers and respected their sentiments. He was of compassionate nature. He overwhelmed the soldiers with his concern for them individually and collectively. His soldiers were ready to do anything for him. It was this relationship that kept his morale high in spite of all his difficulties and shortcomings.
Netaji was an experienced soldier. He used to read a lot and did his homework on the subject which he had to deal with. He was given the quality of judging the character of the person who served him, placing the right man in the right place at the right time and at the right job. He never failed to appreciate when praise was due. He was so kind that he never punished anyone. He always gave a chance and advice to a defaulter to improve himself. He had a remarkable power of observation and could accurately predict any event. The author remembers many such incidents.
Netaji had deep military foresight. Once during the annual session of the Indian National Congress at Tripuri, Jabalpur in March, 1939, he proposed to the British government to send an ultimatum to free India within six months or prepare themselves for a national struggle. . The right wing opposed him but what Netaji had predicted came true. He believed that no power in the world could enslave India. Army officers ridiculed this belief, which they saw as an illusion and a face-saving device.
Actually, Netaji had a plan which was beyond the understanding of professional soldiers. Netaji's trick had converted the British Indian Army into the Indian Army. The days of the British Raj in India were nearing their end. Netaji was a staunch secularist. The author believed that through him and his government he was sure to get complete justice. He was indeed a great person.
