The story begins with the narrator describing how he met a strange beggar. One day a beggar came to him and asked for help. The beggar said that he was a schoolmaster and needed some help as he did not have money for his travels. He said that he was out of service for a year and was now offered a position in the Kaluga province, but he had no fare to travel.
Skvortsov, a lawyer by profession in Petersburg, was filled with suspicion because he had seen the man somewhere before. So, he scolded her for begging in the name of a schoolmaster and threatened to hand her over to the police. The beggar then exposes himself and says that once he was a musician in a Russian choir but had turned out to be drunk. Now he was useless.
The narrator offered to help him if he agreed to do the work. The beggar agreed. The narrator assigned him the task of chopping wood. He asked his maid Olga to take over the work from him. Olga was a woman of cross behavior. He presented the ax to the beggar. As the beggar was not behaving properly because of his state of intoxication, Olga became irritated. She got angry with the man and abused him but extended her hand and the wood was cut. After an hour he told the lawyer that the work was over. The lawyer asked him to give half a ruble and also asked him to come the next day if he wanted to chop wood. The next day the beggar came and did the same thing again and got half a ruble for him. Olga was assigned to oversee his work.
Later, Skvortsov was impressed by her calm demeanor. He liked her for his inclination to work. He offered her a ruble. Then he sent him to a friend of his for some good government job. Lushakov, as he was named, then left. Two years passed. One day, Skvortsov saw a man paying for his ticket at the theater's ticket office. He recognized him. Lushakov was. She was glad to learn that Lushakov was now in good standing in the notary's office and earned thirty-five roubles.
Skvortsov was glad that it was his efforts that turned a beggar into such a good position. But Lushakov said that it all happened because of Olga who did this. He said that Olga never let him chop wood. She used to do it herself but every day every now and then, she used to think for him. She used to tell him, “O unlucky fellow! You have no happiness in this world, and in the next you will burn in hell, poor drunk! You poor sad creature!" All this changed Lushakov's life and he was so impressed that he stopped drinking and changed himself. He was very grateful to her because whatever she did, she did it for her better future. Then, as soon as the bell rang, Lashkov left.
