The Gita is set in the Mahabharata, a great epic of that time. Its message unfolds in the middle of the battlefield with seven divisions of the Pandava army on one side and eleven divisions of the Kaurava army on the other.
It was Lord Krishna who preached the Gita to prepare Arjuna for battle. Arjuna was a Kshatriya and the fight was in his blood. But first he tried to avoid the war. Even Krishna tried to mediate but all went in vain, making war inevitable. And finally Arjuna came to the battlefield to perform his duty, that is, to fight a war with the Kauravas. He made Krishna his charioteer.
Many powerful kings surrounded him. But before starting the fight he takes a look at the people who had gathered on the battlefield and finds their loved ones on either side. Now it has become difficult for him to fight with his own relatives. His heart is full of deep pain. He feels sad. Here a question arises. If the people standing in front of Arjuna were not his relatives, would Arjuna also feel the same pain? certainly not.
This means that his attachment to his kin and relatives prevents him from fighting. This attachment towards family and relatives tarnishes his sense of duty. He tells Krishna not to get involved in the war. War is never good as it destroys the whole clan and brings total destruction.
Arjuna's arguments are not baseless. But the point is that he is not voicing his own authentic belief. His words seem wise but in reality it is not. Lord Krishna realizes this and proceeds to clear his confusion by ignoring all the arguments of his (Arjuna). He knows very well that Arjuna is not the one who believes in non-violence. For him war is his natural and inevitable duty. But he is trying to avoid it because he is confused. Once this illusion is cleared, he will be ready to fight with full energy.
Lord Krishna preaches the Gita to remove the confusion that stands between us and our Swadharma. Arjuna is confused about his religion. He is in the grip of confusion about his Swadharma. Krishna strongly criticizes him so that he cannot ignore the call of duty. And at the end of the Gita, Arjuna is completely disillusioned. He comes to know what his Swadharma is. Thus, eliminating confusion is the central message of this chapter.
