There are three verses in the poem. The poet has tried to express the pain of a tree cut into two pieces. कविता में तीन श्लोक हैं। कवि ने दो टुकड़ों में कटे एक पेड़ की पीड़ा को व्यक्त करने का प्रयास किया है। पेड़ की शाखाएं पेड़ से अलग हो जाती हैं और जो कुछ बचता है वह लकड़ी के दो लट्ठे एक दूसरे से अलग होकर अगल-बगल पड़े रहते हैं। अब वे एक दूसरे से धीमी आवाज में बात करते हैं। उनकी बातें ध्वनि से होती हैं। वे टूटे दिल से और दर्द से रोते हुए अपने पुराने दिनों को याद करते हैं।
वे कहते हैं, वे पुराने दिनों को याद करते हैं जब उन्हें तेज हवा और बारिश ने उन्हें ऊपर से पैर तक भीग दिया था। ध्वनि से बहने वाली हवा जानती थी कि ये जीवन के गीत हैं। वसंत से शरद ऋतु तक परिवर्तन स्वाभाविक हैं।
लेकिन बहुत से लोग इन गीतों की सराहना नहीं कर पाते हैं क्योंकि ये कुंद हैं (कुन्द बुद्धि वाले ) । अगर सरल शब्दों में व्यक्त किया जाए तो वे भी पीड़ा को नहीं समझ सकते हैं। ऐसे लोगों से ध्वनियों में व्यक्त गीतों को समझने की अपेक्षा कैसे की जा सकती है। कवि इन पंक्तियों के माध्यम से कहता है कि ध्वनियाँ शब्दों की अपेक्षा संप्रेषण का अधिक अभिव्यंजक और शक्तिशाली साधन हैं। शब्द वास्तव में आंतरिक भावनाओं को मारते हैं और भाव का मूल्य शब्दों और वाक्यों में पूरी तरह से नुकसान है।
