1. Emperor Yayati was one of the ancestors of the Pandavas. He never knew defeat. They followed the instructions of the scriptures, worshiped the gods and worshiped their ancestors with intense devotion. He became famous as a ruler devoted to the welfare of his subjects.
2. He was prematurely old due to Shukracharya's curse that he had done injustice to his wife Devyani. In the words of the poet of Mahabharata: "Yyati attained that old age which destroys beauty and brings misery." Needless to describe the sorrows of vigorous youth suddenly bled in age, where the magnitude of the loss is magnified by the pain of memories.
3. Yayati, who suddenly found himself an old man, was still haunted by the desire for sensual pleasure. He had five beautiful suns, all of whom were virtuous and perfect. Yayati called him and appealed for mercy for his affection: “The curse of your grandfather Shukracharya has made me unpredictable and prematurely old. I do not have the feet of the joys of life, for not knowing what was laid out for me. I lived a life of moderation, depriving myself of even legitimate pleasures. One of you should bear the burden of my old age and give his youth in return. Whoever agrees to this and casts his youth on me, will be the ruler of my kingdom. I want to enjoy life in the full swing of youth."
4. He first asked his eldest son to do his bidding. The son replied: "O great king, if I take your old age on me, the women and servants will scoff at me. I cannot do that. Ask my younger brothers who are more dear to you than me."
5. When the second son was asked, he gently denied the word: "Dad, you ask me to take old age which destroys not only strength and beauty, but—as in! Seeing— Knowledge. I'm not strong enough to do that."
6. The third son replied: “An old man cannot ride a horse or an elephant. His voice will falter, what should I do in such helplessness? I can't agree."
7. The king was enraged to see that his three sons had refused to act according to his wish. He hoped for the better from his fourth son, to whom he said: “You take away my old age. If you exchange your youth with me, I will give it back to you after some time, and I will take back the old age with which I have been cursed."
8.The fourth son begged to be forgiven, as it was something to which he could never agree. An old man has to take the help of others even to keep his body clean, it is the most pathetic condition. As much as he loved his father, he could not.
9. Yayati felt sad when the four sons refused. He stayed for the son. me and then prayed to my last son, who had not yet resisted her wishes: "You save me the most. I have got this old age with its wrinkles, weakness and gray hair because of Shukracharya's curse. I Can't bear it. If you take these infirmities on you, I will enjoy life for some more time and then return your youth to you and resume your old age and all its miseries. Puru, don't refuse like your elder brothers." Puru, the youngest son, inspired by love, said: "Father, I gladly give you my youth and free you from the sorrows of old age and the worries of the kingdom. Be happy." Hearing these words, Yayati became young. Puru, who accepted his father's old age, ruled the kingdom and attained great fame.
10. Yuyali enjoyed life for a long time and not being satisfied, later went to the garden of Kubera and spent many years with an Apsara maiden. After long years of futile attempts to quench desire by indulgence, the truth appeared before him. Returning to Puru he said:
11. “Dear son, the desire for sex is never quenched by enjoyment, there is more than fire by pouring ghee into it. I had heard and read this, but had not realized it until now. No object of desire - gold, animal and woman - nothing can ever satisfy man's desires. We can attain peace beyond likes and dislikes only through mental posture. Such is the position of Brahma. Take back your youth and rule the kingdom wisely and well. ,
12. With these words Yayati took back his old age. Puru, who regained his youth. The king was made by Yayati who had retired to the forest. He spent his time there in penance and attained heaven at the appropriate time.
