4. Swami Vivekananda says that character building is like the shell of a tortoise. One can break the outer shell of the tortoise into pieces but the tortoise will not take out its legs and head in the shell once [keep inside] both the limbs. Man also controls his organs and inner purpose for the suitability of his character and only a man of character can attain the truth. He can do no evil.
5. We meet a hundred people a day. Some of these hundred may be good, some may be bad. There could be someone you love the most. When you go to bed at night you only remember the best that you love. The rest just disappear from your mind.
6. This world is not a permanent abode. It is one of the stages in the long journey of life and soul. So says Swamiji. 'Stay unattended'. That's why you act like a stranger in this country.
7. Don't work like a slave, work line master. Ninety percent of men and women act like a sleeve and the result is misery and suffering. A slave works without any pleasure in work and therefore does not find love in what he does. There is no act of love that cannot bring happiness in life. So this is the difference between the work of a slave and a master. The master's work brings peace while the slave's work brings misery.
8. Lord Krishna says: If I stop working for a moment, the whole universe will rot and die. Because, I love the world, I work continuously but still I keep myself unattended.
9. As soon as one realized this, his job was done and he added the goal.
10. Whatever you do for your child, a particular person, a city or a state, do not ask for anything in return because you do not ask your children for anything for the work done for them. It will bring happiness to you and you will be away from this worldly bondage.
11. There are two things that guide a man's conduct – strength and kindness. The exercise of might is an act of selfishness. Mercy is heavenly.
To be good, you have to have mercy. A selfless and carefree person may live in the middle of a crowded and sinful city but he will not commit any sin. It is like a lotus leaf carrying drops of water on its body but the drops are not able to moisten the lotus leaf. Therefore, kindness is the real quality of man.

कर्मयोग के संपूर्ण दर्शन का वर्णन कथाकार ने इस पाठ 'कार्य का रहस्य' के ग्यारह परिच्छेदों में किया है।
1. संसार दुखों से भरा है। मनुष्य की अज्ञानता के कारण दुख उत्पन्न होते हैं। लेखक कहता है "अज्ञान सभी बुराइयों की जननी है"।
अपने जीवन से दुखों को दूर करने के लिए व्यक्ति को आध्यात्मिक रूप से मजबूत और शिक्षित होना चाहिए। मानव जाति को शुद्ध और प्रीफेक्ट बनाना है।
2. काम का प्रभाव या तो अच्छा होता है या बुरा। ईश्वर हमें आज्ञा देता है कि काम करने का अच्छा प्रभाव होगा और बुरे काम का बुरा परिणाम होगा। ईश्वर की आज्ञा है निरंतर कार्य करना। कर्म करो लेकिन आत्मा को बंधन से बचाओ। इसका मतलब है कि कभी भी खुद को शामिल न करें, वांछित परिणाम प्राप्त करें। मनुष्य की यही इच्छा पीड़ा का कारण है जिससे बचना चाहिए।
3. लेखक या कथाकार कहता है कि मन एक झील की तरह है जहाँ विचारों की लहर उठती है और अंत में डूब जाती है लेकिन यह एक छाप छोड़ती है जिसका अर्थ है कि विचार फिर से प्रकट हो सकते हैं। विचारों का यह पुन: प्रकट होना आपके 'संस्कार' का हिस्सा है।
प्रत्येक मनुष्य का चरित्र इसी संस्कार से निर्धारित होता है। अच्छा प्रभाव हो तो चरित्र अच्छा बनता है। इनके द्वारा किया गया कार्य अच्छा रहेगा और परिणाम हमेशा अच्छा ही रहेगा।
4. स्वामी विवेकानंद का कहना है कि चरित्र निर्माण कछुआ के खोल के समान है। कोई कछुआ के बाहरी आवरण को टुकड़ों में तोड़ सकता है लेकिन कछुआ एक बार [अंदर रखना] दोनों अंगों को खोल में अपने पैर और सिर को बाहर नहीं निकालेगा। मनुष्य अपने चरित्र की उपयुक्तता के लिए अपने अंगों और आंतरिक उद्देश्य को भी नियंत्रित करता है और केवल चरित्रवान व्यक्ति ही सत्य को प्राप्त कर सकता है। वह कोई बुराई नहीं कर सकता।
5. हम दिन में सौ लोगों से मिलते हैं। इन सौ में से कुछ अच्छे हो सकते हैं, कुछ बुरे। कोई हो सकता है जिससे आप सबसे ज्यादा प्यार करते हों। रात में जब आप बिस्तर पर जाते हैं तो आपको केवल वही सबसे अच्छा याद आता है जिसे आप प्यार करते हैं। बाकी आपके दिमाग से बस गायब हो जाते हैं।
6. यह संसार स्थायी निवास नहीं है। यह जीवन और आत्मा की लंबी यात्रा के पड़ावों में से एक है। तो स्वामीजी कहते हैं। 'अनअटेंडेड रहें'। इसलिए तुम इस देश में अजनबी की तरह काम करते हो।
7. गुलाम की तरह काम मत करो, काम लाइन मास्टर। नब्बे प्रतिशत पुरुष और महिला एक आस्तीन की तरह काम करते हैं और परिणाम दुख और पीड़ा है। एक गुलाम काम में बिना किसी आनंद के काम करता है और इसलिए वह जो करता है उसमें प्यार नहीं पाता है। प्रेम का कोई कार्य ऐसा नहीं है जो जीवन में खुशी न ला सके। तो गुलाम और मालिक के काम में यही फर्क है। मालिक का काम शांति लाता है जबकि गुलाम का काम दुख लाता है।
8. भगवान कृष्ण कहते हैं: अगर मैं एक पल के लिए काम करना बंद कर दूं, तो पूरा ब्रह्मांड सड़ जाएगा और मर जाएगा। क्योंकि, मैं दुनिया से प्यार करता हूं, मैं लगातार काम करता हूं लेकिन फिर भी मैं खुद को अनअटेंडेड रखता हूं।
9. जैसे ही किसी को इस बात का एहसास हुआ, उसका काम हो गया और उसने लक्ष्य को जोड़ लिया।
10. आप अपने बच्चे के लिए जो कुछ भी करते हैं, एक विशेष व्यक्ति, एक शहर या राज्य बदले में कुछ भी नहीं चाहते हैं क्योंकि आप अपने बच्चों से उनके लिए किए गए काम के लिए कुछ भी नहीं मांगते हैं। यह आपके लिए खुशी लाएगा और आप इस सांसारिक बंधन से दूर रहेंगे।
11. दो चीजें हैं जो मनुष्य के आचरण का मार्गदर्शन करती हैं-शक्ति और दया। पराक्रम का प्रयोग स्वार्थ का कार्य है। दया स्वर्गीय है।
अच्छा बनने के लिए दया करनी पड़ती है। निःस्वार्थ और बेपरवाह व्यक्ति भीड़ भरे और पापी शहर के बीच में रह सकता है लेकिन वह कोई पाप नहीं करेगा। यह वैसे ही है जैसे कमल का पत्ता अपने शरीर पर पानी की बूंदों को ले जाता है लेकिन बूंदें कमल के पत्ते को गीला नहीं कर पाती हैं। अतः दया ही मनुष्य का वास्तविक गुण है।
