Once upon a time people used to laugh openly. There was honesty in his laughter. His laughter emanated from his heart. There was truth in his actions and feelings. But people laugh superficially, in the present. His laugh is imaginary, emotionless. The eyes are dead like numb, and sympathetic/indifferent. Even people join hands mechanically and wish people artificially but not with heart.

In the third verse, the poet tells more about the changes that take place in man with age. He has focused on the lies, frivolous feelings and deteriorating human relations in today's society. The poet also says that people lie when they say positive phrases such as "feel at home" and "come back". When the poet comes to his house for the third time thinking that his words are true, the doors close in his face. In this physical and artificial world the poet has learned many things, especially by wearing many faces, like wearing many clothes. This means that he changes his expression and feelings to suit the circumstances and needs of the people he has to deal with.

In such behavior he loses his own character and his own qualities. Like this is the way of the world, the poet has learned to laugh with his teeth but not with his heart. He has also learned to shake hands with others but not from the heart. They have learned to say 'goodnight' when they mean good riddance. When he is not happy he learns to say happiness by meeting you and when he is bored while talking he says 'It is good to talk to you'.

But the author is fed up with the pretense of forcible hypocrisy and lies. He wants to regain his real soul and character. He wants to leave all these lies. He honestly wants to laugh like a child. His laughter exposes all the misconceptions of the world. When he looks at himself in the mirror his teeth open up and they look like snake fangs.

In the last stanza, the poet appeals to his son to show him how to smile with all his heart. The poet's desire to get back to his original traits of his character, honesty and give up his lies and hypocrisy reveals his longing for innocence, trust and honesty.

एक जमाने में लोग दिल खोलकर हंसते थे। उनकी हंसी में ईमानदारी हुआ करती थी। उनकी हंसी उनके दिल से निकली। उनके कार्यों और भावनाओं में सच्चाई थी। लेकिन लोग सतही तौर पर हंसते हैं, वर्तमान में। उनकी हंसी काल्पनिक, भावहीन होती है। आंखें बेसुध, और सहानुभूतिहीन/उदासीन की तरह मृत हैं। यहां तक कि लोग यंत्रवत रूप से हाथ मिलाते हैं और कृत्रिम रूप से लोगों की कामना करते हैं लेकिन दिल से नहीं।

तीसरे श्लोक में कवि उम्र के साथ मनुष्य में होने वाले परिवर्तनों के बारे में अधिक बताता है। उन्होंने आज के समाज में झूठ, फालतू की भावनाओं और बिगड़ते मानवीय संबंधों पर ध्यान दिया है। कवि यह भी कहता है कि लोग झूठ बोलते हैं जब वे "घर पर महसूस करें" और "फिर से आओ" जैसे सकारात्मक वाक्यांश कहते हैं। जब कवि तीसरी बार उनके घर यह सोचकर आता है कि उनके शब्द सच्चे हैं, तो उनके चेहरे पर दरवाजे बंद हो जाते हैं। इस भौतिक और कृत्रिम दुनिया में कवि ने कई चीजें सीखी हैं, खासकर कई चेहरे पहनकर, जैसे कई कपड़े पहनना। इसका मतलब है कि वह उन लोगों की परिस्थितियों और जरूरतों के अनुरूप अपनी अभिव्यक्ति और भावनाओं को बदलता है जिनके साथ उसे निपटना है।

लेकिन लेखक जबरन पाखंड और झूठ के ढोंग से तंग आ चुका है। वह अपनी वास्तविक आत्मा और चरित्र को पुनः प्राप्त करना चाहता है। वह यह सब झूठ छोड़ना चाहता है। वह बच्चों की तरह ईमानदारी से हंसना चाहता है। उनकी हंसी दुनिया की सारी भ्रांतियों को उजागर कर देती है। जब वह खुद को आईने में देखता है तो उसके दांत खुल जाते हैं और वे सांप के नुकीले लगते हैं।

अंतिम छंद में कवि अपने बेटे से पूरे दिल से मुस्कुराने का तरीका दिखाने की अपील करता है। अपने चरित्र, ईमानदारी के अपने मूल लक्षणों को वापस पाने और अपने झूठ और पाखंड को छोड़ने की कवि की इच्छा मासूमियत, विश्वास और ईमानदारी के लिए उसकी लालसा को प्रकट करती है।
