As a school going boy, Narayana Murthy was the most promising boy in his class. He could solve even the toughest problems that were too difficult for his superiors. He came from a poor but educated family. His father was a high school teacher. Like all other students, Narayana Murthy also wanted to take admission in IIT. He appeared for the entrance exam and did well. His dream was always to study in IIT. He was thrilled to know that he passed the exam with a higher rank.

When Narayana Murthy told his father that he wanted to join IIT, his father reminded him of his poverty. Murthy's father advised him to stay in Mysore and study as much as he wanted. Saying this his father felt very sad. Murthy became disheartened and his heart sank in sorrow. He was an introvert so he never shared his sadness or helplessness with anyone. When his classmates were on their way to Madras, Murthy went to the station to say goodbye to them. Though they were all excited and talking loudly, Murthy remained silent. He greeted them and shook his hand as he slowly left the train platform. He remained there even after the train had left. He believed that only hard work could change his life. He inadvertently followed "Your best friend is yourself and your worst enemy is yourself, the philosophy of Bhagavad Gita. With great determination, Narayana Murthy reached great heights in his life. He proved that legal and moral Earning money is possible.
