Rendezvous with Ray is a news report published by Frontline on 29 July and 11 August 2006. This is all about the iconic cine director Satyajit Ray from Calcutta (Kolkata). French-Canadian pastor Gaston Robert presents his experiences with Ray in this lesson.

In 1961, when Pt. Gaston Robert was 26 years old, he was familiar with the works of Satyajit Ray through the Apu Trilogy. He saw all three films at once—the event that made him fall in love with the people of India and Bengali cinema and culture. Robert gives a scholarly, original analysis of Ray's works in his latest book, "Satyajit Ray, Essays: 1970-2005". In his youth, Robert knew about Bengal through Mircia Eliade's La Nuit Bengali, some poems by Tagore, and a Reader's Digest article on Mother Teresa. He was haunted by the harsh image of poverty depicted in "Saint of the Slums" and Apu's world came as a reassurance. Ray's critics accused him of building his reputation by selling India's poverty to the West. But Robert was struck by the enormous spiritual poverty of some wealthy people, which is worse than material poverty.

He wanted to meet Ray and befriend him but it took him nine years to reach Kolkata. He wanted to know more about Ray's works so that they could have a meaningful dialogue when they met. Their friendship lasted for about 22 years until Ray's death in 1992. Their quiet friendship developed over the years. Ray's friends called her Manikada. He was shy and wise in showing his feelings. He was very simple and humble and with a subtle sense of humour. The two friends used to meet at 9 am on Sunday at Ray's residence on Bishop Lefroy Road in Kolkata. Ray used to show Robert the private screening and welcome his comments. Ray often addressed Robert as a French-speaking priest in Bengali and Robert felt that this was Ray's admiration for him. Ray wrote his manuscripts in Bengali for his set-designer, with notes in English, with staff notation of sketches and music. Once, he missed out on Charulata's script. Although he knew who the culprit was, he did not want to take any action with human concern.

We find remarkable comparisons between Tagore and Ray in their works. There is also a philosophical analogy between them. We find all the characters in Ray's movies like rich, poor, powerful, humble, farmer, city man, kid, teen, adult, old man, woman etc.
