William Stanley Houghton's one-act play "The Dear Departed" is a satirical drama that explores family relationships and the lies and the hypocrisy and greed that often lie beneath it. The story exposes the sad fact that human beings often become dehumanized because of greed and meager material gain. The play satirizes the decline of moral values in respect and care within family members. This story clearly shows how elderly people are abused. Stanley Houghton uses a variety of literary devices to criticize basic human characteristics in his play. He uses irony, satire, humor and a twist in the plot to criticize human traits. He tries to bring the qualities of two daughters named Mrs Slater and Mrs Jordan to their father. He tries to show how sisters are interested in their father's property instead of showing genuine care and affection towards their father.

The story begins with Mrs Slater asking her daughter Victoria to change her dress before the arrival of her sister (Slater's sister) Elizabeth and Elizabeth's husband Ben. Mrs. Slater's husband, Henry, has sent her a telegram with the message of her father-in-law's death and that Elizabeth and Ben are coming to discuss the old man's affairs. Henry wonders if they will come at all because Elizabeth has said that she will never set foot in their house again. But Mrs. Slater says her sister will come fairly quickly, following her share of what her father has left. Mrs. Slater asks her husband to put on his father's new slippers. She also suggests that they should replace their shabby old drawers with her father's valuable bureau which is in his bedroom. After some hesitation he agrees to do so. Mrs. Slater wants to do it before they come.

Mrs. Slater locks the door and she and her husband carry the old box of drawers upstairs. Henry is shocked when Victoria asks him if they are taking a peek at Grandpa's bureau. He replies that the grandfather gave it to his mother before his death. Mrs. Slater walks in with a beautiful watch and puts it on the mantelpiece. Mrs. Slater and her husband take down the old-fashioned bureau and put it in place of the drawer. At the same time Victoria let Mrs. Jordan and Ben in. Mrs. Jordan walks straight to Mrs. Slater and kisses her and the men shake hands. Mrs Jordan remarks that her father has finally left. Mrs. Slater replies that it is seventy-two last Sunday fortnightly. She tells them that the old man was happy that morning and had gone out to pay his insurance. Ben and Mrs. Jordan comment that this is a good thing on their part.

According to Mrs. Slater, her father is found dead when she carries something for him on the tray.
Ben and Mrs. Jordan do not want to see the old man; They like to drink tea and so Mrs. Slater prepares the tea. They think of publishing the announcement of the old man's death in the newspapers. Then they decide to look at the old man's things and make a list of them. Mrs. Jordan tells that the old man has promised his gold watch to his Jimmy. Then Victoria tells them that Grandpa hasn't paid for their insurance. Ben calls him a "drunken old beggar". Both the sisters complain that they had to live with their father for so many years. Then Mrs. Slater tells Victoria to bring the bunch of keys from Grandpa's room. Victoria is afraid to leave but she does. After some time, she comes back very frightened and tells them that Grandpa is getting up. They are in awe. Vigorous and good-coloured old Abel comes my season.
