रस्त्याच्या पलीकडे जाण्यासाठी एका क्रॉसिंगवर एक चिंध्या कपडे घातलेली वृद्ध स्त्री उभी होती; ती ट्रॅफिक थांबण्याची वाट पाहत होती जेणेकरून तिला सुरक्षितपणे पलीकडे जाता येईल.

ती वाट पाहत राहिली; पण वाहतूक थांबली नाही. कोणीही तिची गरज आणि काळजी याकडे लक्ष दिले नाही. काही वेळाने मुलांचा एक गट शाळेबाहेर आला; ते आनंदी आणि गोंगाट करणारे होते. नव्याने पडलेल्या बर्फाशी खेळत ते क्रॉसिंगवर उभ्या असलेल्या वृद्ध महिलेच्या मागे गेले.

एकाही मुलाने तिला रस्ता ओलांडून जाण्यास मदत केली नाही. मात्र, एका मुलाने तिची दखल घेतली आणि तिला मदत करायला गेला. त्याने प्रेमाने तिला रस्ता ओलांडायला मदत केली.

जेव्हा तो त्याच्या मित्रांकडे परत गेला तेव्हा त्याने सांगितले की त्याने म्हातारी स्त्रीला मदत केली की एखाद्या दिवशी तिच्या वृद्ध आईला अशाच परिस्थितीत कोणीतरी मदत करेल जेव्हा तो तिच्यापासून दूर असेल.

वृद्ध महिलेला मदत केल्यावर मुलाला खूप समाधान वाटले. त्या रात्री त्या वृद्ध स्त्रीने देवाला प्रार्थना केली की ज्या मुलाने तिला रस्ता ओलांडण्यास मदत केली होती त्याच्यावर दयाळूपणे वागावे.
