Long ago, a man named Tegumai Bopsulai lived in a cave. He had little clothes and could not read or write but he was still 'very happy'. His wife's name was Teshumai Tevindro and their daughter was Tafimai Metallumai. Tafimai learns to walk and goes everywhere with her father. One day they go on a 'beaver-swamp' to hunt fish. Tegumai broke his spear and Tafimai offered to go home to his cave to fetch his second spear. He was worried that the journey would be too long and too dangerous for his little girl, so he decided to repair his broken spear instead. Tafimai looks and thinks. She suddenly tells her father, 'It's a terrible nuisance that you and I don't know how to write' because knowing how to write can send them a message for a new spear. Tegumai agrees.

A man known as Stranger appears by the river. He belongs to a different tribe and speaks a different language. The stranger laughs at Tafimai and she tries to talk to him but he can't understand her. He looks at the father and daughter and is impressed by Tafimai. He assumes that Tegumai is an 'Umra chief'. Tafimai tries to tell the stranger to tell her mother about the second spear, but he still doesn't understand. He fears that if the little girl does not do as she is told, her father will be angry. To show that his heart is pure, he gives Tafimai a piece of white sal, but she misses the point. She assumed that the stranger wanted her mother's address. She grabs Stranger's shark teeth and scratches pictures of her home in the bark of a tree. The stranger explained the meaning of the boy's drawings as a sign of impending war and of the great chief's desire to unite his army. The stranger decided to help Tegumai bring his army. He runs away and accidentally sees Teshumai Tivindro talking to other women outside her cave. The stranger gives her a picture of the bark. Teshumai misinterprets the picture. She thinks her husband has been murdered by a stranger, so she attacks him. Teshumai and the women gather the tribe and Stranger demands to take them to Tegumai and Tafimai.

The stranger is angry and hurt. He takes them back to the river where both Tegumai and Tafimai are alive and well. They are surprised that the whole gang has appeared. Tafimai clarified the reality of her picture and apologized to the stranger. Everyone laughs. They decide that although writing is a momentary picture, it is a good invention.
