सह्याद्री निसर्ग मित्राचे भाऊ काटदरे लिखित 'समुद्री कासवांची सत्यकथा' ही कथा वन्यजीव आणि पर्यावरण रक्षणाचा धडा आहे. लेखक एका प्रकल्पावर असताना त्याच्या स्वतःच्या अनुभवाबद्दल बोलतो- त्याला आणि त्याच्या स्वयंसेवकांना समुद्रकिनार्यावर कासवाच्या अंडींचा खड्डा सापडला. ते सागरी कासव आणि अंडी यांच्या संरक्षणासाठी प्रकल्प तयार करतात....वेळा, तालुका मदनगड, जिल्हा रत्नागिरी येथे ही मोहीम होती. मोहिमेचा एक भाग म्हणून काही स्थानिक लोकांच्या सहकार्याने ही मोहीम करण्यात आली. विशेषत: सकाळी समुद्रकिनार्यावर कासवाचे घरटे शोधण्यासाठी नियुक्त केले गेले जेव्हा ते समोर आले आणि होय त्यांनी काळजीपूर्वक घरट्यातून अंडी काढून टाकली आणि त्यांना पुन्हा त्याच ठिकाणी पुरले परंतु तारांच्या कुंपणाने संरक्षित असलेल्या संरक्षित घरट्यावर लक्ष ठेवावे लागले. या वर्षात चोरी रोखण्यासाठी आम्ही 15 चे यशस्वीरित्या संरक्षण करू शकलो जेव्हा लहान मुले अंडी बाहेर काढतात तेव्हा काय एक घटना होती जी संपूर्ण गावाने चष्मा पाहण्यासाठी समुद्रकिनाऱ्यावर गर्दी केली होती जेव्हा लहान कासवाचे अंडी चांदीच्या वाळूच्या ओलांडून रोलिंगला भेटण्यासाठी वाचली. अमर्याद पहा त्यांना प्रेक्षकांकडून काय नवीनता प्राप्त झाली आहे, गावातील काही वडील कबूल करतात की त्यांनी त्यांच्या शालेय दिवसांपासूनच कासवाची अंडी पाहिली होती हे त्यांनी प्रथमच पाहिले होते. समुद्राकडे धावणारी अंडी उबवलेली कासव जगात सात प्रकारची समुद्री कासवे आहेत त्यापैकी भारतात आढळतात ऑलिव्ह रिडले कासव महाराष्ट्राच्या संपूर्ण किनारपट्टीवर घरटी करतात हिरव्या कासवांचे आणि स्वच्छ बिल्ले देखील आढळले आहेत कासवाची एक आश्चर्यकारक वैशिष्ट्ये म्हणजे जेव्हा मादी कासव परिपक्वतेपर्यंत पोहोचते तेव्हा जवळजवळ 15 वर्षानंतर ती अंडी घालण्यासाठी किनाऱ्यावर परतली त्याच ठिकाणी जिथे ती माणसे नव्हती कोनो तिथे वाळूत घरटे बनवायचे आहे आणि पाय घालणार आहे. ताबडतोब समुद्रात परतली ती पुढच्या भागात परतली नाही त्यानंतर 45 ते 50 दिवसांच्या कालावधीनंतर नैसर्गिक उष्णतेचा वापर करून ते अंडी बाहेर काढतात एका विश्वासार्ह धोकादायक ठिकाणी खोल समुद्रात लहान अंडी उबवण्याची वाट पाहत असतात आणि त्यांना या सर्वांचा सामना स्वतःहून करावा लागतो जगण्याचा दर कायद्यासाठी आहे कारण 8000 कासवांपैकी फक्त एक किंवा दोन कासव आणि ते समुद्र स्वच्छ ठेवण्याचे महत्त्वाचे कार्य सागरी पर्यावरणशास्त्रात महत्त्वाचे स्थान व्यापतात.
