The scene of the play is set in a school. The play begins with a sixteen-year-old boy, Taplow, being detained by his teacher to compensate for his one-day absence. He is waiting for his teacher, Mr. Crocker-Harris, who has not yet arrived. Another teacher, Mr. Frank, finds Taplow waiting in the room and starts talking with him.

Taplow introduces himself and tells him that he is a student of lower fifth grade. He feels that if he is promoted, he will gain expertise in the next term. He also tells Mr. Frank that Mr. Crocker-Harris does not tell the students their results in advance like the other teachers. Mr. Frank is shocked. He assumes that the headmaster announces the results on the last day but it is not a criterion. Taplow says that only Mr. Crocker-Harris follows the rule that students are not told about their results before they are officially announced.

Mr. Frank asked Taplow if he would study science if the results were favorable. Taplow is excited by the idea. Mr. Frank is sad that he finds all the poor students. Mr Crocker-Harris told him that he gave Taplow what he deserved, no less and no more. Taplow fears that Mr Crocker-Harris may mark him for doing extra work.
