The Address Summary in English

Here we have uploaded the The Address Summary in English for students. This will help students to learn quickly in English and Hindi language.

Mrs. Dorling's indifferent attitude to the narrator
The narrator knocked on the door of a house, but the door opened only slightly. She asked the owner if she knew him. The narrator told her that she was the daughter of Mrs. S. But Mrs. Dorling, the mistress of the house, denied knowing him. There was no trace of identification on Mrs. Dorling's face and she stared at him without saying a word.

The narrator thought that he might have made a mistake and rang the wrong bell. The narrator then got a glimpse of her mother's green knit cardigan, which was worn by Mrs. Dorling. This confirmed to her that she had reached the correct address. But Mrs. Dorling excused herself by saying that she could not talk to the girl that day and that she should come again later. Then he shamelessly closed the door.

someone looking at the narrator through the window
Even after the door was closed, the narrator stood on the stairs for some time. Someone was watching him from the bay window. The girl assumed that someone other than Mrs. Dorling must have been watching her and asked why the narrator had come there.

The narrator remembers what his mother told him
After this refusal, the narrator goes back to the station thinking of his mother. His mother had given him Mrs. Dorling's address years ago. This was in the first part of the war. The narrator's mother told him about Mrs. Dorling, an old acquaintance.

She also told him that whenever Mrs. Dorling came, she would take something home with her. The reason Mrs Dorling gave for her actions was that she wanted to save all good things, as the narrator's mother would not be able to save everything if she had to leave suddenly. The narrator's mother had accepted the idea. She obliged Mrs. Dorling to carry so much heavy baggage every time she went, because it was really risky during the war.

The narrator remembers when she met Mrs. Dorling
The narrator reached the station without paying much attention to things on the way. She was walking in familiar places again for the first time since the war. She did not want to bother herself with the sight of the streets and houses filled with memories of the past. He remembered the first time he saw Mrs. Dorling on the train. It was the morning after that day when his mother told him about Mrs. Dorling, who was wearing a brown coat and a shapeless hat. The narrator had asked her mother if she lived far away, as she was carrying a heavy bag. Her mother told her that Mrs. Dorling lived at number 46, Marconi Street.

Initially the narrator was reluctant to look at the family's old belongings.
The narrator remembered the address, but waited too long to be there. Initially after the war ended, she had no interest in all of her belongings lying with Mrs. Dorling. She was afraid to see the things that belonged to her dead mother. She did not want their belongings lying in boxes and cupboards in Mrs. Dorling's house and that they needed to be put back in their old places. She was afraid that things would make her very nostalgic. But gradually her life became normal again and one day she became curious to know about all the wealth.

The narrator decides to meet again
After his first trip yielded no results, he decided to travel for a second time. This time a girl of about fifteen years old opened the door because her mother was not at home. The narrator asked about Mrs. Dorling. She was told that Mrs. Dorling was not at home. He followed the girl on the way. He saw an old-fashioned iron candle-holder, which he never used. They went to the meeting room.

The narrator was horrified. He found himself among their old belongings, but they tortured him because they were kept in strange surroundings and in a very tasteless manner. She was hurt to see her family's belongings lying tastelessly with ugly furniture and foul smell. Table cloths, silver curries and even still life depicting apples on tin plates belonged to her family.

The narrator's curious observation about Mrs. Dorling's daughter
She looked intently at the girl, whose back was as wide as Mrs. Dorling's. The girl was keeping cups of tea to serve. She was pouring tea from a white teapot with a gold border on the lid and then took out a few spoons from the box. This whole crockery and coderie belonged to the narrator's family, but perhaps the girl was not aware of this. He made fun of eating dinner on those ancient plates. The narrator also found burn marks on the tablecloth. The narrator indirectly hints to the girl that they have missed things that are either missing from their place of origin or have been lent to someone.

The narrator reminisces about polishing the silver outlay
The narrator recounts a time when his mother was alive and the narrator was either bored or ill at home. His mother asked him to polish the silver kadhi. she was surprised

Hearing that the curry they were using was made of silver and Mrs. Dorling's daughter was also surprised to hear that they were using silver curry for their daily meals.

narrator's final resolution
descriptor no

I decided that she could no longer live there. The address was correct but the narrator didn't want to remember it anymore. He realized that the objects were attached to the memory of the time that no longer existed. They had lost their value in strange surroundings.

He consoled himself thinking that his current home is too small to accommodate all the old stuff. She left all the belongings of her family and went home.
