रात 10.30 बजे तक वे दारचेन पहुँचे, जहाँ उन्हें ठहरने के लिए एक गेस्टहाउस मिला। यह सड़क का अंत था। लेखक की रात बहुत परेशान करने वाली थी। उसके नथुने अवरुद्ध हो गए थे और वह अपने फेफड़ों में पर्याप्त हवा नहीं ले पा रहा था। रात भर वह सो नहीं पाता था, इसलिए वह सो नहीं पाता था।

Departure from Ravus
The author leaves Ravu with an interpreter, Daniel and Tsetan, a tourist guide. They saw Drokbas on the way
As they passed through the hills, they saw different Drokba (nomadic shepherds) taking care of their flock. Both men and women were seen. They were wearing thick woolen clothes. He would stop and stare at his car, sometimes shaking his hand as they passed.

Encounter with Tibetan Mastiff
When they passed by the nomads' tents, they saw some Tibetan mastiffs, the dogs used by the shepherds. When the car approached their tent, they barked furiously and fearlessly. They would follow the car for some distance and then go back. In earlier days, Tibetan mastiffs became popular as hunting dogs in the imperial court of China. They were brought along the Silk Road from Tibet as a tax payment.

The turns became sharper and harder as they climbed. The writer started having a severe headache. Suddenly snow started falling and soon the road was blocked. Daniels and the author got out of the car to ease the load on sharp turns. The altimeter clock on the author's wrist indicated that he was at an altitude of 5210 m above sea level. The icy top layer of snow was dangerous, as the car could slide off the road. When they reached an altitude of 5515 m, which was the top of the pass, the atmospheric pressure dropped so low that Tsetan had to open the lid of the petrol tank to release the evaporated fuel.

back on the highway
By late afternoon, they had reached the small town of Hor on the banks of Lake Mansarovar, on the old trade route between Lhasa and Kashmir. From there Daniel returned to Lhasa. Tsetan got the flat tire of the car repaired there. Hor was a grim, pitiful place. There was no vegetation, only dust and rocks. There was garbage all over the place. Unlike in the past, that place no longer seemed sacred.

By 10.30 pm they reached Darchen, where they found a guesthouse to stay. It was the end of the road. The writer's night was very disturbing. His nostrils were blocked and he was unable to get enough air into his lungs. He could not sleep through the night, so he could not sleep.

The next day Tsetan took the writer to Darchen Medical College. The doctor told him that it was just the cold and the altitude that was giving him trouble. The doctor gave him some medicine and that night the writer was able to sleep soundly.

Tseten drops the writer at Drchen and drives back to Lhasa with the car. He did not care whether the author would die in Darchen or not. He was a good Buddhist and believed in the afterlife. However, he was concerned that the death of the author might affect his business, as he could not find more; Tourists who need to stay together until the road ends.

Like Hor, Darchen was dusty and a lot of garbage could be seen all around. The city appeared to be sparsely populated. There were no pilgrims, because the season had not started yet. He had reached there very early. He really wanted to reach Mount Kailash to do Kora to get a feel for what a pilgrimage is like. But he didn't want to do it alone. He was looking for someone who could speak or understand English.

As they sat in the only cafe in Darchen, Norbu, an obese Tibetan working at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing saw them reading an English book. So Norbu introduces himself to the author. He also went there to pray, although he was not a religious person. So both of them decided to do Kora together.
