उसी दोपहर रंगा हाथ में संतरे का एक जोड़ा लेकर कथाकार के घर गया। कथाकार ने सोचा कि इतने अच्छे और उदार लड़के को शादी कर घर बसा लेना चाहिए। उसने उससे शादी करने की योजना के बारे में पूछताछ की। रंगा ने कहा कि वह जल्दी शादी नहीं करना चाहता। वह सही लड़की की तलाश में था जो काफी परिपक्व हो। दूसरी बात, वह अपनी पसंद की लड़की से शादी करना चाहता था। वह समाज में प्रचलित अरेंज मैरिज के पक्ष में नहीं थे। जब तक उसे अपनी पसंद की लड़की नहीं मिल जाती, तब तक वह कुंवारा ही रहना चाहता था।

कथावाचक ने शास्त्री से कहा कि बेचारा रंगा को कुछ चिंता हो रही थी और वे उसकी मदद लेने आए थे। कुछ हिसाब-किताब का ढोंग करने के बाद शास्त्री ने कहा कि यह एक लड़की की बात है। कथाकार के सवाल पर कि वह लड़की कौन थी, शास्त्री ने कहा कि उसके पास समुद्र में मिली किसी चीज़ का नाम है - कमला, पच्ची, काई, मोती या रत्न - कीमती पत्थर।
