कविता 'लेटर टू मार्था' डेनिस ब्रूटस द्वारा लिखी गई है। कवि ने यह कविता जेल में रहते हुए लिखी थी। यह जेल में कवि के अनुभवों का वर्णन करता है।

कारागार में कवि दुःख और शोक से भरा हुआ है। कवि ने अपनी कविता में बादलों और पक्षियों के महत्व का वर्णन किया है। बादलों और पक्षियों के महत्व का वर्णन करते हुए वे परोक्ष रूप से प्रकृति की सुंदरता का वर्णन करते हैं जो वह अपने जेल-घर के बाहर देखते हैं।

कवि आकाश में बादलों और पक्षियों को देखता है। लेकिन उसे इस बात का बहुत अफ़सोस है कि कारागार की दीवारें दुश्मन और नीरस हैं। जेल घर की ऊंची दीवारें होने के कारण वह पूरा आसमान नहीं देख पाता है। साथ ही कारागार-गृह के प्राधिकारियों से भी दुश्मनी है। वे कवि को आकाश में बादलों और पक्षियों की प्राकृतिक सुंदरता को देखने की अनुमति नहीं देते हैं।

कवि को आकाश के तारे प्रिय हैं। लेकिन उन्हें यह कहते हुए खेद हो रहा है कि उन्हें सितारे भी नहीं दिख रहे हैं। उसे लगता है कि जेल-घर में वक्र और कुछ गैर-धातु तत्व, आकाश में हवाई जहाज की तरह उड़ने वाले पक्षियों की दृष्टि को नष्ट कर देते हैं। कवि उड़ते पक्षियों की गतिविधियों की प्रशंसा करता है और साथ ही यह कहते हुए बहुत खेद होता है कि उनकी प्राकृतिक स्वतंत्रता नष्ट हो जाती है। उनका कहना है कि पक्षियों की पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता बहुत सार्थक है। पक्षियों को आकाश में पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता का आनंद लेना चाहिए। लेकिन चूंकि कवि उड़ते हुए पक्षियों को नहीं देख पाता है, उसे लगता है कि पक्षियों की स्वाभाविक भावना नष्ट हो रही है।

कवि आकाश में बादलों के महत्व का भी वर्णन करता है। आकाश में बादलों की गति अबाधित है। बादलों की आवाज संगीत की तरह है। कविता और नृत्य। कवि कहता है कि मेघों की सुहावनी गति नाजुक छंदों को प्रकट करती है। कवि को यह कल्पना करने में खेद है कि बादल कहाँ गायब होने जा रहे हैं। वह अपने आप से पूछता है कि क्या घर पर रहने वालों को बादल दिखाई देंगे। वह फिर पूछता है कि वे किससे प्रसन्न होंगे। कवि स्वयं बादलों की सुंदरता को नहीं देख सकता।

The poet says that the pleasant motion of the clouds reveals the delicate verses. The poet regrets imagining where the clouds are going to disappear. He asks himself whether those staying at home will see clouds. He then asks with whom they will be pleased. The poet himself cannot see the beauty of the clouds.
