एक दोपहर एक परिवार के सदस्य घर के अंदर आराम कर रहे थे। एक साइकिल चालक ने अपनी साइकिल की घंटी बजाई और घोषणा की कि उसने एक सांप को घर के परिसर में प्रवेश करते देखा है। घोषणा करते हुए, उन्होंने अपने रास्ते का अनुसरण किया।

यह सुनकर मां और उसके चार बेटों का परिवार गेट पर जमा हो गया। उन्होंने अपने पुराने नौकर दास को शेड में सोते हुए पाया। उन्होंने उसे जगाया और अपने बंगले के परिसर में सांप के प्रवेश के बारे में बताया। नौकर ने मामले को अनसुना करने का प्रयास किया। उन्होंने उसे कोबरा खोजने के लिए मजबूर किया। उन्होंने उसे धमकी दी कि अगर वह सांप का पता लगाने में विफल रहा तो उसे बर्खास्त कर दिया जाएगा। कुछ पड़ोसी भी वहाँ जमा हो गए और नौकर पर आलसी होने का आरोप लगाया। नौकर ने यह कहते हुए अपना बचाव किया कि वह घास काटने वाली मशीन की नियमित मांग करता है। उन्होंने इस पर और इसकी कीमत पर कुछ देर बात की। इसी बीच परिवार का एक कॉलेज का लड़का अंदर आ गया। उसने सर्पदंश से लोगों की मौत के बारे में एकत्र किए गए आंकड़ों को पढ़कर सुनाया।

परिवार के लड़के बांस की लाठी लेकर आए और नौकर के हाथ में भी दबा दिया। उन्होंने लताओं, झाड़ियों और बगीचे में सब कुछ के साथ काम किया लेकिन उन्हें सांप नहीं मिला। जब और कुछ नहीं रहा तो उसने किया, नौकर ने विजयी होकर पूछा कि साँप कहाँ है।

इसी बीच गेट पर एक बूढ़ी भिखारी भीख मांगने के लिए रोने लगी। उन्होंने उसे परेशान न करने के लिए कहा क्योंकि वे एक सांप का शिकार कर रहे हैं। यह सुनकर बूढ़ी औरत ने जी सुब्रमण्यम होने की घोषणा कर दी और उसकी हत्या से मना कर दिया। माँ ने अपने वचन 'अभिषेक' को याद करते हुए उनके बयान पर सहमति व्यक्त की। उसने बुढ़िया को एक सिक्का दिया।

कुछ ही देर में एक बूढ़ा व्यक्ति द्वार पर प्रकट हुआ और अपने को सपेरा घोषित कर दिया। वे उसके चारों ओर जमा हो गए। उन्होंने सांपों पर अपनी जीत की कहानी सुनाई। उन्होंने उसे कोबरा पकड़ने के लिए कहा, लेकिन असहाय होकर, उसने उनसे कहा कि वह कुछ नहीं कर सकता जब तक कि वे उसे नहीं दिखाते कि कोबरा कहाँ है। उसने उन्हें अपना नाम और पता दिया और कहा कि अगर उन्होंने सांप देखा है तो उसे बुलाओ।

शाम पांच बजे उन्होंने लाठी-डंडे फेंके और गंभीर स्थिति से निपटने के लिए अपनी रणनीति के बारे में बात करने लगे। इसी बीच बूढ़ा नौकर हाथ में घड़ा लेकर प्रकट हुआ और घोषणा की कि उसने सांप को पकड़ लिया है। नौकर ने अपनी बहादुरी के बारे में डींग मारी और उनसे कहा कि वे उसे नीरस और आलसी कहकर दोष न दें। उसने सांप को पास में रहने वाले सपेरे को सौंपने की बात कही। माँ ने उसकी सराहना की और वह चला गया।

दास को गए पांच मिनट हुए थे कि सबसे छोटा बेटा रोया, 'देखो! एक कोबरा परिसर के एक छेद से निकला था।' वह एक पल के लिए सभा को देखने के लिए रुका और फिर गेट के नीचे रेंगता हुआ और एक नाले के साथ गायब हो गया। एक रहस्य बना रहा कि वहां दो सांप थे या नहीं। नहीं तो घड़े में क्या था, नौकर लेकर बाहर गया था। अगर उन्होंने बर्तन की जांच की होती, तो वह साफ हो जाता।

Hearing this, the family of the mother and her four sons gathered at the gate. He found his old servant Das sleeping in the shed. They woke him up and told him about the snake's entry into the premises of his bungalow. The servant tried to ignore the matter. They forced him to find the cobra. They threatened him that he would be sacked if he failed to locate the snake. Some neighbors also gathered there and accused the servant of being lazy. The servant defended himself by saying that he regularly demanded a mower. He talked for a while on this and its cost. Meanwhile, a college boy from the family came inside. He read out the data collected about the deaths of people from snakebites.

The boys of the family brought bamboo sticks and also pressed it in the hand of the servant. He worked with vines, bushes and everything in the garden but he could not find a snake. When there was nothing else he did, the servant triumphantly asked where the snake was.

Meanwhile, an old beggar at the gate started crying for begging. They asked him not to disturb as they are hunting for a snake. Hearing this, the old lady declared herself to be G Subramaniam and refused to kill him. The mother agreed to his statement, remembering her word 'Abhishek'. He gave a coin to the old lady.

In no time an old man appeared at the door and declared himself a snake charmer. They gathered around him. He narrated the story of his victory over snakes. They asked him to catch the cobra, but helpless, he told them that he could do nothing until they showed him where the cobra was. He gave them his name and address and told them to call him if they saw the snake.

At five o'clock in the evening they threw sticks and sticks and started talking about their strategy to deal with the dire situation. Meanwhile the old servant appeared with a pitcher in his hand and announced that he had caught the snake. The servant bragged about his bravery and told them not to blame him for being dull and lazy. He told to hand over the snake to the snake charmer living nearby. Mother appreciated him and he left.

It had been five minutes since Das had passed out when the youngest son cried, 'Look! A cobra came out of a hole in the compound.' He paused for a moment to watch the gathering and then crawled under the gate and disappeared along a creek. A mystery remained whether there were two snakes or not.
