In Wolf's 1924 short story 'The New Dress', Mabel Waring arrives at Clarissa Deloitte's party and is immediately overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. These negative emotions are offset by the worry that her new outfit is not appropriate for the occasion. After greeting her hostess, she goes straight to the distant mirror of the room to see herself, and she is filled with sadness, convinced that 'this was not right.' She imagines the other guests exclaiming to themselves, 'She looks so scared!' What a wonderful new dress! ” Trying to look 'original' she begins to bother herself: the latest fashion dress is out of her reach, so she had a yellow silk dress made from an outdated pattern. Her self-condemnation torments herself, as she torments herself with the cracked thoughts of her foolishness 'which deserves to be punished.' That new costume is a 'terrible ... stupidly old-fashioned.' When the stylishly dressed Rose Shaw tells her that the dress is 'absolutely glamorous', Mabel is sure she's being teased.

She tries to think of some ways to 'remove this pain, make this pain bearable.' The sharp edge of the tongue and the apparent torment that Mabel is experiencing may be intended to give the reader some indication that she may not be completely mentally or emotionally stable. Mabel remembers how happy and comfortable she felt in the dressmaker, Miss Milan pinned her hem, asked her about the length, and held her pet canary. However, this image quickly disappears, as it returns to the present, 'suffering, awakening to reality.' She hurts herself to take care of what other people think of her, but turns to thoughts of her own 'strange, weak, weak character.'

Mabel thinks about her unforgettable family and upbringing, her dreams of falling in love in a distant land, and the reality of her marriage to a man with a 'safe, permanent underlying job.' Decides to pursue a personal transformation through 'some wonderful, useful, wonderful book' or an inspiring public speaker. She gets up to leave the party and assures Mrs. Dalloway that she has enjoyed herself.
