Step 1: I return home after four years of research in North India. I got my doctorate. I also received a lot of praise for my work on making toys with Umi. I used to get bored of eating chapatis every day but now I have to eat Athikira rice (a type of rice popular in Central Kerala).
Step 2: When I get back home, it will be planting time. My father is in the basement of our house. He is wearing a yellow mud handkerchief. He is excited about the water in the Varangal canal. He will receive me amidst the shouts of plowing with many oxen.
Step 3: The bulls will stop when they see me walking with the suitcase. A smile comes to his father's lips, and he does not show it. From the field he asks me when I started my journey from there.
Step 4: My little brother carries young seedlings for planting in the plow. When he saw me, he would run and cry, so that those in the house would hear, 'Mom, my brother has come.'
Step 5: I walk carefully through the dyke so as not to disturb the baskets stored there. They are full of seeds. I'm finally home. The mother drained the well-cooked rice.
I tell the train to run fast so that I can get home quickly and eat satisfactorily.

Step 6: The bus stops on the road near my house. When we left the place, we could see palm frond houses in the distance on the right. But now nothing. There are only trees. The whole place has changed.
Step 7: I see rows of rubber plants around me. They grew to double my height. I used to see mutton and vellaran (paddy varieties) here. I'm even confused about the way home.
Step 8: No noise from people below. There are no shouts of plowing. The whole field is planted with palm trees. In the corner, along the canal, are the Dealwood (soft, easy-to-see wood, commonly used to make packing cases and boxes).
Step 9: I'm going home. On the south side, my father is watching the workers repairing the rubber sheet making machine. He looks happy and content.
Verse 10: My father proudly says that he has stopped producing paddy. It was totally uncomfortable. The farmer got nothing. Only fools try to cultivate paddy for any gain. Rubber money is good. The good times have come. The government provides rice to those who do not have paddy fields.
Step 11: My little brother runs to see me. I want to eat whole rice. He is the one who carries the rations for the household. He scatters wheat in the yard over something.
Step 12: An airplane flies over us. It goes north. The sound of the plane drowned out my brother's loud cries. CM flies to the center to get more grains. Now he flies over the cash crops that grow like trees. No one is promoting paddy cultivation here.
Step 13: Can we get some shells from the center to make toys? I do not know.
