The tree was like a big umbrella. It provided much needed shade and comfort. Before continuing the journey, the passengers sat under it for a while and rested. There was a ‘horegallu’ under the tree to facilitate them. ‘Horegallu’ means ‘stone that can bear weight’.

It was a large flat stone with two vertical stones placed horizontally. It was a stone bench. People can sit on it, chat with fellow travelers and exchange news about the road. Cold water was stored in earthenware pots so passengers could drink the water. I'm sure there are such simple arrangements across the country.

Horegallu in our village gives me special memories because it is associated with my grandfather. He was a retired teacher from the school. He would spend hours talking to those who rested under the tree. When I was tired of playing, I would sit next to him and listen to them and watch people.

Page 27: Most of the villagers were taking a break from work in the nearby fields. They had to walk long distances every day. He had to carry heavy loads on his head. Exhausted by the heat, they drank cold water, washed their faces and talked to their grandfather. They often talked about their lives and worries.

Later in life I came across something reminiscent of that Horegall. I was working in Mumbai. One of my colleagues was Ratna. She was a senior clerk and a middle-aged woman who was always smiling. She had been working for the company for about 25 years after graduation. She continued to work with a happy face.

Every day at lunch, she would sit in a room with someone and talk to him / her. I often wondered what they were talking about. One day at lunch I asked what they were talking about. Ratna told me that they shared their problems with him.
