नीलरतन प्रवेश करता
हैनीलरतन : हलो, यह तो चतु बाबू हैं। तुम कब आये?
चतुर्भुज : एम. ए. परीक्षा पास कर सीधा आया हूँ।
मैंनीलरतन : अरे, तुम्हारे पास तो एक शानदार बिल्ली है।
चतुर्भुज : इस साल परीक्षाएँ बहुत थीं।
नीलरतन : मुझे बताओ, यह बिल्ली तुम्हें कहाँ मिली?
चतुर्भुज : खरीदी है-विषय जो मैंने चुने थे……
नीलरतन : इसके लिये कितना मूल्य दिया।
चतुर्भुज : मुझे याद नहीं। नीलरतन बाबूं क्या हमारे गाँव में किसी ने कोई परीक्षा पास की है?
नीलरतन : ओह बहुत सारे। पर हाँ ऐसी बिल्ली तुम्हें इस इलाके में नहीं दिखेगी।
चतुर्भुज : (स्वयं से) बुरा हो इसका, वह बिल्लियों के अलावा कोई बात नहीं कर सकता-इसे इस बात में कुछ दिलचस्पी नहीं कि मैंने अभी-अभी एम. ए. पास किया है।)
(जर्मीदार का प्रवेश)
जमींदार : अरे चतुर्भुज तुम पूरे समय कलकत्ता में क्या करते रहे?
चतुर्भुज : श्रीमान् मैंने अभी-अभी एम. ए. समाप्त किया है।
जमींदार : अपनी पुत्री को खत्म कर दिया-तुम्हारी खुद की पुत्री (बंगाल से मेये) को तुम ऐसे कैसे कर सके?
चतुर्भुज : आप मुझे गलत समझ रहे हैं-बी. ए. पास करने के बाद मैं
जमींदार : उसकी शादी कर दी! और हमको कुछ सुनाया ही नहीं।
चतुर्भुज : शादी नहीं-बी. ए.
जींदार : ओह, एक ही बात है-तुम शहर के लोग जिसे बी. ए. करते हो हम लोग उसे ‘बिये’ (बंगाली में विवाह) कहते हैं। खैर जाने दो-तुम्हारी यह बिल्ली बहुत अद्भुत है।
चतुर्भुज : श्रीमान आप गलत समझ रहे हैं।
जमींदार : कोई गलती नहीं। तुम्हें इस पूरे जिले में ऐसी बिल्ली नहीं मिलेगी।
चतुर्भुज : पर हम बिल्लियों की बात नहीं कर रहे हैं।
जमींदार : निश्चित ही मैं तुम्हें कहता हूँ, तुम्हें ऐसी दूसरी बिल्ली नहीं मिलेगी।
चतुर्भुज : (स्वयं को) इसको समझ में नहीं आयेगी।
जमींदार : आज शाम को अपनी बिल्ली के साथ मेरे निवास पर क्यों नहीं आते? बच्चे बड़े प्रसन्न होंगे।
चतुर्भुज : निश्चित ही-मैं ठीक समझ गया। उन्होंने मुझे काफी लम्बे समय से नहीं देखा।
जींदार : हाँ, मैं ऐसा मानता हूँ। किन्तु मेरा मतलब है कि यदि तुम खुद न आ सको तो बेनी को बिल्ली के साथ भेज देना-मैं चाहता हूँ कि बच्चे उसे देखें। (बाहर जाते हैं)
(सतु चाचा प्रवेश करते हैं)
सतु : मेरे बच्चे कैसे हो? बहुत समय से तुम बाहर थे, क्या नहीं?
चतुर्भुज : सही कहा। बहुत सारी परीक्षाएँ थीं। सतु-यह तुम्हारी बिल्ली है।
चतुर्भुज : (गुस्से से) मैं घर जा रहा हूँ (जाने को होता है)
सतु : सुनो, जरा एक मिनट रुको-यह बिल्ली
चतुर्भुज : नहीं श्रीमान, मेरे पास काम है।
सतु : आओ, मेरे एक सामान्य प्रश्न का उत्तर दो। यह बिल्ली
(चतुर्भुज तेज कदमों से बिना कुछ बोले बाहर चले जाते हैं) जरा इसे देखो। यह आजकल की शिक्षा है जो नवयुवकों को बिगाड़ रही है। हम इनकी कीमत समझते हैं। पर ये छल-छद्म .. से भरे हैं।
छोटा बालक : दादा, क्या मैं यह बिल्ली ले सकता हूँ?
चतुर्भुज : (बालक को जोर से चौटा मारकर) बिल्ली, बिल्ली, बिल्ली, दिन भर बिल्ली। ये ले।
माँ जी : कोई आश्चर्य की बात नहीं यह लड़का गुस्सा है तो। वह इतनी दूर से इतने समय बाद आया है और ये बच्चे उसे चिढ़ा रहे हैं (चतुर्भुज से) लाओ बिल्ली मुझे दो, बेटे! मैं उसे कुछ चावल और दूध जो मैंने अलग रखे हैं देती हूँ।
चतुर्भुज : (गुस्से से) लो, माँ तुम बिल्ली को और उसे जो चाहे खिलाओ। मैं भोजन के लिए नहीं जा सकता-मैं तत्काल वापस जा रहा हूँ।
माँ जी : (खुशामद करते) तुम ऐसा क्यों कह रहे हो? तुम्हारा भोजन तैयार है और तुम्हारा इन्तजार कर रहा है। तुम नहाते ही उसके लिये बैठ जाओ।
चतुर्भुज : नहीं, मैं जा रहा हूँ। तुम लोग इधर बिल्लियों के बारे में सनकी हो रहे हो। कोई भी महत्वपूर्ण आदमी की फिक्र नहीं करता (बिल्ली को लात मारता है)
चाची : अरे बिल्ली को मत मारो-उसने किसी को हानि नहीं पहुँचायी है।
चतुर्भुज : जब बिल्ली का मामला आता है तो तुम सबको उतनी चोट पहुँचती है। किन्तु तुम्हें किसी आदमी जात पर कोई दया नहीं आती। (निकल.जाता है)
छोटी बच्ची : (बाहर देखकर) हरी चाचा, बाहर आओ देखो कितनी लम्बी और मोटी पूँछ।.
हरी : किसकी पूंछ, चतुर्भुज की?
बच्ची : नहीं, बिल्ली की।
(सड़क पर
चतुर्भुज बाबू हाथ में बैग लिये बिना बिल्ली के प्रवेश करते हैं)
साधुचरण :
श्रीमान्, वह आपकी बिल्ली कहाँ है?
चतुर्भुज : मर गई। साधुचरण-कितने दुःख की बात है? ऐसा कैसे हुआ?
चतुर्भुज : (चिढ़कर) मुझे नहीं मालूम।
(परन बाबू का प्रवेश)
परन : हैलो! तुम्हारी बिल्ली का क्या हुआ?
चतुर्भुज : मर गई। परन-नहीं, नहीं, वास्तव में! कैस?
चतुर्भुज : उसी तरह जिस तरह तुम मरोगे-एक रस्से के सिरे से बँधकर (अर्थात् फाँसी पर लटकते हुए)।
परन : हे भगवान, ये तो निश्चय ही गुस्सैल है।
(बच्चों का झुण्ड तालियाँ बजाते और पूसी बिल्ली, पूसी बिल्ली कहकर चिढ़ाते चतुर्भुज के पीछे दौड़ते आते हैं।)
