Kasturba Gandhi was the daughter of a wealthy merchant of Porbandar (Kathiawad). At the age of 13, she was married to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. His father was a firm believer in the prevailing customs. He did not believe in Kasturba's teachings. After marriage, her husband taught her to read and write. In 1897, she moved to South Africa with her husband and worked there until 1914. Along with her husband, she led the women's Satyagraha movement, due to which she was imprisoned.

Kasturba not only took part in the movement, but she also gave very important speeches wherever she went. For example, while addressing the women of Vadhatal village on 6th April, 1918, he said, “The true religion of a woman is to follow the footsteps of her husband like Sita. If she exhorts her husband to persevere on the sacred promise (not to pay the arrears of rent) then her future child will be brave and then India will win Swaraj.”

She went from village to village with Gandhiji in the first non-cooperation movement started by Gandhiji. Along with her husband, she made a special appeal to women to spin yarn, wear khadi, boycott government schools, colleges and remove untouchability. He was arrested in 1931 and again in 1932 for trying to stop people against alcohol and foreign clothes.

He was arrested in 1939 for participating in the Rajkot Satyagraha and was released only when Gandhiji began his fast. She was arrested again in August 1942 when she was on her way to address a meeting against the arrest of her husband and was kept in a prison with her husband in Poona. In February 1943, when Gandhiji observed a fast for 21 days, he took great care of Gandhiji. Gradually his health deteriorated and on 11 February 1944 he died in prison. Throughout her life, she worked wholeheartedly for the welfare of the people and for the eradication of untouchability. He led a simple and modest life.
