The Gold Frame is a short story written by cartoonist RK Laxman. In this story the author tries to bring out the characteristics of the Indian middle class. The hypocrisy and false prestige specific to the middle class are well exposed in this story. The style of the story is in line with the theme of humour.

Modern Frame Works is an extra large wooden packing case tucked between two other stores. Datta, the owner of Modern Frame Works, is the central figure in the story. He was a slender man with silver-rimmed glasses and the complexion of weathered wood. He was a calm and hardworking person. He spoke very little and discouraged casual friends and useless gossip.

Once a customer goes to Dutta to get an old photograph framed in the best possible frame. He respects, admires and admires the old man, leading him to believe that the person in the picture must have been a perfect person. The customer is great for his ability to recognize and respect such humanity. The client has no will of his own so Dutta comes to his rescue to help him select a suitable frame. With her help he selects the cut mount for his picture. The customer talks as if framing the picture was his life's mission but he doesn't even like to pay the price quoted by Dutta. After the price and date are fixed, he leaves.

His customers came a few days ago and left disappointed or came months later. Some never came and their pictures were lying unclaimed in a box. Thus Datta will not start his work unless his clients come twice before the due date. His tall and rustic looking client came after ten days to see the work in progress. When Dutta understood his client's interest in the frame, he took photographs to frame it. Dutta accidentally spills enamel paint on the sacred picture of the customer. He tries to rub it with a piece of cloth but the shape gets peeled off. The respectable old man's face turned into thick black spots, which had stuck to the enamel on the piece of cloth in his hand. Dutta was afraid of the consequences. Every vein in his head was beating as if it would burst if he did not hold it down. Dutta thought of an alternative solution like creating another picture. Luckily he found one with which he could take reasonable risks. In his confusion, Dutta ordered a square frame, while the customer ordered an oval frame. This in a way saves Dutta. The customer questions the frame and not the photo, which saves Dutta. The result is humour.

The story exposes Dutta's cunning nature. RK Laxman shows the cunning nature of Dutta. RK Laxman portrays the customer as a fool. The customer agrees on the price, although he feels it is high. Even after so many compliments, the bargain on price would still fool him. So both her worship for the old man as well as her willingness to pay any price for the frame are questionable. The data is saved by the folly of the customer rather than by his own experience or cleverness. Thus the story The Gold Frame has suspense, irony and humor as a result of the theme, characterization, setting and style.

उसके ग्राहक कुछ दिन पहले आ गए और निराश होकर चले गए या महीनों बाद आए। कुछ तो कभी नहीं आए और उनकी तस्वीरें एक बॉक्स में लावारिस पड़ी थीं। इस प्रकार दत्ता अपना काम तब तक शुरू नहीं करेगा जब तक कि उसके ग्राहक देय तिथि से दो बार पहले नहीं आते। उनका लंबा और देहाती दिखने वाला ग्राहक दस दिनों के बाद काम में प्रगति देखने के लिए आया था। जब दत्ता ने फ्रेम में अपने ग्राहक की रुचि को समझा तो उन्होंने उसे फ्रेम करने के लिए फोटो खींच लिया। दत्ता गलती से ग्राहक की पवित्र तस्वीर पर इनेमल पेंट बिखेर देते हैं। वह इसे कपड़े के टुकड़े से रगड़ने की कोशिश करता है लेकिन आकृति छिल जाती है। सम्माननीय बूढ़े का चेहरा मोटे काले धब्बों में बदल गया, जो उसके हाथ में कपड़े के टुकड़े पर लगे इनेमल से चिपक गया था। दत्ता परिणामों से डरते थे। उसके सिर की हर नस इस तरह धड़क रही थी मानो अगर वह उसे दबाए न रखे तो वह फट जाएगी। दत्ता ने एक और तस्वीर तैयार करने जैसे वैकल्पिक समाधान के बारे में सोचा। सौभाग्य से उसे एक ऐसा मिल गया जिसके साथ वह उचित जोखिम उठा सकता था। अपने भ्रम में दत्ता ने चौकोर फ्रेम फ्रेम किया, जबकि ग्राहक ने अंडाकार फ्रेम का ऑर्डर दिया। यह एक तरह से दत्ता को बचाता है। ग्राहक फ्रेम पर सवाल करता है न कि फोटो पर, जिससे दत्ता बच जाता है। इसका परिणाम हास्य होता है।
