Bipin Choudhary, popularly known as Bipin Babu, used to visit Kalicharan every Monday after work to keep his books for a week. He lived alone, and did not have very close friends and was not fond of talking nonsense. One such Monday, when he was looking for Kalicharan's books, a man named Parimal Ghosh addressed him as if he knew Bipin Babu. Bipin Babu did not recognize him. The man claimed that he had seen Bipin Babu in '58 when Bipin Babu came to Ranchi. But, Bipin Babu never went to Ranchi. Despite his desire to visit the place, he was not able to do so, so he told the person that he was mistaken. But the man knew a lot about Bipin Babu and he didn't stop talking. Bipin Babu left the shop and set out for a drive on the banks of the Ganges. He was a hardworking person who had a responsible job in a big firm. It was hard for him to believe that he did not remember such an important event in his life and that too six to seven years ago. He didn't want to think about what the man had said but couldn't stop doing it. He thought of meeting his friend Dinesh Mukherjee, whom the man said was on a journey with him. But he did not go to meet her as he did not want to feel any embarrassment face to face. According to Bipin Babu, he was attending a puja in Kanpur and stayed at the residence of his friend Haridas. He thought about confirming with her but remembered that he had moved to Japan and did not have his new address. After dinner he finally calmed down when he slept in bed with his new book. The very next day at the office before lunch, he thought of ending it when he called with Dinesh Mukherjee. Dinesh also told her that both of them had gone on a visit to Ranchi in October 58. Bipin Babu became more worried. The same evening an old friend of his named Chunilal came to visit him. Bipin Babu knew that he had come to ask for help for a job for which Bipin Babu had told him that there was little hope of it. He asked his servant to send him off but he suddenly realized that he could ask Chunilal about his visit. Chunilal also remembered about the journey and claimed that he had booked his tickets for Ranchi for it. Bipin Babu admitted that he was working very hard and decided to go to the doctor. He visits a doctor, Dr. Chanda and his case was outside his area of experience and expertise. Nevertheless, he suggested that he visit Ranchi once again. Bipin Babu booked a first class ticket for Ranchi. As soon as he got out of the train, he realized that he had never been to this place. When he went to visit Hudru Falls, he was found unconscious by two Gujarati gentlemen who had come with a group for a picnic. Upon waking up, Bipin Choudhary realized that there was no hope left for him and returned to Calcutta. On reaching home, he receives a letter from Chunilal describing how Chunilal conspired a complete punishment for Bipin Babu for being insensitive to an old friend, when he was out of luck. When the doctor visits him, Bipin Babu tells him that his memory is fine now and that he wants to take a pain reliever for his hip pain which he got after falling in Ranchi. Doctors call this 'a unique case.'
